  • Coach Carter, directed by Thomas Carter, is a 2005 sports drama based on a true story. When the Richmond Oilers basketball needs a new coach, they turn to Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson), a successful sporting goods store owner and former stand out player at Richmond. Carter accepts and inherits the team from the former coach, Coach White (Mel Winkler). When Coach Carter begins working with the team members including Kenyon Stone (Rob Brown) and Timo Cruz (Rick Gonzalez) he is appalled at the performance on and off the court. In order to encourage the players to do better, he enacts a strict code of conduct the players must adhere to in order to be eligible to play. Some of the things Coach Carter requires include the team must attend all classes and maintain a 2.3 GPA, even though the school requirement is only 2.0. Under Coach Carter's management the team improves their grades and their game. When the team starts to slip into old habits, Coach Carter retaliates by locking up the gym until the team upholds their end of the deal.moreless
