  • Doctor Faustus is the 1967 film adaptation of the classic Christopher Marlow play staring screen legends Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Telling the immortal tale of Doctor Faustus (Richard Burton), a German scholar who from his insatiable appetite for knowledge and power sells his soul to the devil Lucifer (David McIntosh) in exchange for the services of infernal servant Mephistopheles (Andreas Teuber). The terms of the contract are that Mephistopheles must bring him whatever he desires in whatever form of shape he pleases for the next 24 years, at which time Faustus will resign his soul to hell. With Mephistopheles in tow, Faustus begins a whirlwind exploration of the nature of man, god, the devil and the deadly sins. He performs acts of great magic for the Emperor and Pope, visits Hell for a personal tour of the seven deadly sins, indulges all manner of earthly appetites, and even has a supernatural tryst with Helen of Troy (Elizabeth Taylor). However, at the end of the day, all of Faustus' knowledge and experience amount to wasted time as the devil comes to collect his due.moreless
