  • Dragnet is a 1987 comedy directed by Tom Mankiewicz which parodies the 1950's television police drama of the same name. Joe Friday (Dan Aykroyd), the nephew of Joe Friday from the original series, is a stereotypical television cop with a brown suit and fedora hat who is unwillingly partnered with cocky Pep Streetbeck (Tom Hanks). The pair get assigned to investigate religious cult murders happening in Los Angeles. Friday and Streetbeck uncover the P.A.G.A.N. (People Against Goodness and Normalcy) cult which holds secret ceremonies to sacrifice victims. The two cops manage to infiltrate one of the ceremonies where the pair rescue Connie Swat (Alexandra Paul), the intended sacrificial victim. Friday falls in love with Swat and takes her to a restaurant where he recognizes televangelist Reverend Jonathan Whirley (Christopher Plummer) as the cult's leader. Friday decides to arrest the highly influential Whirley despite the fact that he is dining with the police commissioner (Elizabeth Ashley) and his boss Captain Gannon (Harry Morgan). The public embarrassment caused for the commissioner results in Friday and Streetbeck being removed from the case. Things take a twist when the cult kidnaps Swat prompting a rescue mission led by Friday. A series of exciting chases follow leading towards the film's finale.moreless
