Gates of Heaven
- movie Description
Gates of Heaven is a 1978 documentary about pet cemeteries and the owners who mourn them. Inspired by an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, the film explores concepts such as the afterlife and human mortality by interviewing people involved in two California pet cemeteries. The first is run by Floyd "Mac" McClure, a genial man who wants to give pets an honorable final resting place that their owners will enjoy visiting. McClure, however, is not a terribly astute businessman and his pet cemetery eventually goes under, necessitating the removal and transfer of 450 dead pet graves. They are moved to the pet cemetery known as Bubbling Well Memorial, which is run by John Harberts and his sons. Unlike McClure, the Harberts are simply businessmen and they do a superb job of keeping Bubbling Wells profitable. Through interviews with the owners of the pets that are moved, director Errol Morris weaves a fascinating story that is as much about human nature as it is about pets.moreless
