  • In the 2000 IFC production “Happy Accidents,” Ruby Weaver (Maris Tomei) falls for the affable but idiosyncratic Sam Deed (Vincent D’Onofrio). Ruby is a lifetime New Yorker and typical thirty-something: she has a therapist, a mindless job, and a string of less than charming exes. Enter Sam, the most genuine lover she’s met in a while. There is only one problem: he’s from the future. Or so he says. For the entirety of the film, Ruby vacillates between believing his tall tale and falling madly in love, or kicking him out of their apartment on because he’s insane. As can be expected with an IFC flick, there is a substantial amount of talking (it borders on mumblecore). But Tomei and D’Onofrio play it so sincerely, you rarely feel as though it’s disingenuous or pretentiously quirky. You’re only left wondering one thing: will their love survive the test of time travel?moreless
