  • Harvey stars James Stewart as the affable Elwood P. Dodd in this 1950 American classic film. The title of the movie refers to Elwood's friend: a six-foot rabbit who only Elwood (and a few other people) can see. Elwood describes Harvey as a pooka, a mischievous spirit animal who befriends social outcasts like Elwood. Elwood's sister Veta Louise (Josephine Hull) is trying to get her daughter married, and, embarrassed by her brother's imaginary friend, tries to commit him to a mental institution. Comedy ensues when Veta Louise herself ends up committed, after admitting to a doctor that after years of hearing about Harvey, she sometimes sees him, too. The movie is a comedy with a serious message about what it really means to be alive and to really be human. James Stewart earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance, and Josephine Hull won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.moreless
