  • Heaven Can Wait is a 1943 Academy Award nominated comedy directed by Ernst Lubitsch that is based on a play by Leslie Bush-Fekete. After Henry van Cleve (Don Ameche) dies, he knows that he does not have what it takes to get into Heaven, so he instead goes to the sleek offices of Hell to ask well-dressed, debonaire Satan (Laird Cregar) to let him in. Satan has some doubts as to whether Henry truly belongs in Hell, so Henry starts to tell the story of his sinful life beginning with his spoiled childhood. Focusing mostly on his marriage to beautiful Martha (Gene Tierney), whom he stole away from his own cousin, he tells the amused devil stories about how his decades of flirtations with other women affected his poor wife. As Henry unfolds his tale, Satan must decide once and for all whether Henry really deserves an afterlife of eternal damnation.moreless
