Ishtar is a 1987 road comedy starring Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty as untalented singers who find themselves embroiled in international intrigue. Lyle Rogers (Warren Beatty) and Chuck Clarke (Dustin Hoffman) have formed a songwriting and singing lounge act that no one wants to hear. Their agent, Marty Freed (Jack Weston), finally manages to book the duo at a Moroccan hotel. During an overlay in Ishtar, each of the men gets approached by the beautiful Shirra Assel (Isabelle Adjani), who has information that could lead to the overthrow of the ruler, Emir Yousef (Aharon Ipal''), by leftist guerillas. Meanwhile, CIA agent Jim Harrison (Charles Grodin) observes these interactions and begins to suspect Lyle and Chuck of being undercover operatives. The two singers find themselves in the middle of a Middle Eastern political maelstrom between the CIA, the Emir's forces and the guerillas. The two singers begin to turn on one another as they try to find their way to the singing engagement with a target on their backs. Writer Elaine May directs this comedy of mistaken identities and showbiz ambition.moreless
