Johnny Belinda is a 1948 drama about a young deaf-mute named Belinda McDonald (Jane Wyman), who lives with her father, Black McDonald (Charles Bickford), on a small island off the coast of Nova Scotia. Because Belinda's mother died while giving birth to her, her bitter father treats her like an animal and believes that she has no intelligence. A local doctor, Robert Richardson (Lew Ayers), takes an interest in Belinda, though, and teaches the young woman sign language. When Belinda is raped by a drunk town bully, Locky McCormick (Stephen McNally), she becomes pregnant. The locals assume the father of Belinda's child is Dr. Richardson and demand that the doctor leave the town. Despite the controversy, Belinda is mutely happy about the thought of becoming a mother. In her thoughts, she decides to name the baby Johnny. Johnny Belinda is directed by Jean Negulesco and is based on a stage play by Allen Vincent.moreless
