  • Julius Caesar is a 1970 theatrical adaptation of William Shakespeare's play of the same title produced by Commonwealth United Entertainment and directed by Stuart Burge. It was shot primarily in England and Spain, and features a star-studded cast. When Marcus Brutus (Jason Robalds) and Caius Cassius (Richard Johnson) learn of Julius Caesar's (John Gielgud) plan to abolish the Roman senate and assume permanent dictatorial powers, they plot and take part in his assassination. Mark Antony (Charlton Heston), Caesar's friend, vows to avenge his death. Enraging the Roman people against the conspirators, Antony and Caesar's nephew, Octavius (Richard Chamberlain), put their differences aside to drive the assassins out of Rome. Shakespeare's script, as interpreted by screenwriter Robert Furnival, is on full display in this version, with the play's ambiguities and gray areas left to be sorted out by the viewer. It is also the first version of the play to be filmed in color.moreless
