  • King Rat is a 1965 drama that takes place in a Japanese POW camp during World War II. Corporal King (George Segal) is an American POW who has defied military codes of conduct and created a decent life for himself by managing the camp's black market and bartering with his enemies. King stands in sharp contrast to British officer Lieutenant Gray (Tom Courtenay), the camp Provost. Gray attempts to maintain good order and discipline, and to keep the American and British soldiers from crossing the lines that King completely ignores. While the rest of the POWs slowly starve to death, King literally becomes the king of the camp, despite his lower rank. He befriends another British officer, Lieutenant Marlowe (James Fox), and together they continue to increase their quality of life among the squalor. Meanwhile, Gray uncovers more and more layers of corruption within the camp, while striving to stick to his values. What will happen when the Japanese finally surrender, and the king of the camp becomes nothing more than a low-ranking soldier?moreless
