Little Voice is a 1998 feature film by British director Mark Herman. The film revolves around Laura Hoff (Jane Horrocks), the main character with the nickname Little Voice. She is an extremely shy girl who hides in her room and sings along to her passed away father's record collection. Since she spends much of her time singing, she has a very good voice, but she also has severe social anxiety and is unable to speak around strangers. The only person Laura can talk to is her mother, Mari Hoff (Brenda Blethyn), who is desperately trying to find another husband in unscrupulous ways. When Mari becomes involved with Ray Say (Michael Caine), a poor talent manager, everything changes. Ray Say convinces Laura to perform at a shady nightclub and Laura reluctantly agrees. She overcomes her anxiety by pretending that her dad is listening to her in the audience. In the end, however, the pressure of performing makes Laura more reclusive. The film accelerates toward crisis and beyond as Ray Say and Mari put their financial hopes in Laura, while Laura begins to question their motives and her own purpose in life.moreless
