  • Meet John Doe is a 1941 drama directed by famed director Frank Capra. When Ann Mitchell (Barbara Stanwyck) is about to be laid-off from her job as a newspaper reporter, she manufactures a letter from a fictional unemployed man named "John Doe." In the letter, John Doe rails against society's lack of concern for those in need and threatens suicide on New Year's Eve. When the letter is published, the outpouring of support drives circulation to new highs and forces the newspaper to rehire Mitchell. She confesses her deception to editor Henry Connell (James Gleason) and publisher D.B. Norton (Edward Arnold), but convinces them to continue the deception to build newspaper circulation. They hire John Willoughby (Gary Cooper), a washed-up ex-baseball player, to impersonate the fictional John Doe. As Willoughby travels around the country and gives speeches on the radio, his ideas create a political movement that sweeps the nation. When D.B Norton tries to hijack the movement for his own purposes, Willoughby and Mitchel must come to grips with their role in the deception and stand-up for what is right.moreless
