  • Merrily We Live is a 1924 comedy directed by Norman Z. McLeod. Emily Kilbourne (Billie Burke) has the annoying habit of hiring ex-convicts and hobos as servants and chauffeurs for her family's home. When the butler Grosvenor, (Alan Mowbray) discovers the family silver is missing, Emily's husband and children demand that she stop hiring tramps as servants, Emily agrees. Later that day, Wade Rawlins (Brian Aherne) appears asking Emily for food or lodging. Emily can't help herself she hires Rawlins as the new chauffeur, he goes directly to his new quarters to freshen up and put on his uniform. The butler overhears Rawlins talking to himself, and spreads the word he is crazy. Emily's daughters Geraldine "Jerry" (Constance Bennett) and Marion (Bonita Granville) plead with their mother to get rid of him. When Rawlins appears freshly washed and in full uniform, he is a very handsome man, hard for most women to resist. Through the film's quirky characters and clever dialogue we learn more about the true identity of Rawlins.moreless
