  • Pennies From Heaven is a 1981 musical directed by Herbert Ross and based on a BBC television show. Dennis Potter, the creator of the TV series, also co-wrote the screenplay. Just like everybody else in 1930s Chicago, Arthur Parker (Steve Martin) is feeling the sting of the Great Depression. He has tried to make a living as a sheet music sales rep, but in such difficult times, not many people are buying his wares. To make matters worse, the financial strain has also put a strain on Arthur's marriage to Joan (Jessica Harper). Disappointed by life, Arthur finds comfort in his daydreams, where he engages in elaborate musical numbers. In the middle of his daydreams, he accidentally bumps into Eileen (Bernadette Peters), a shy teacher who shares Arthur's fondness for escapism. The two have a brief affair, but Arthur's guilt sends him running back to Joan. Devastated, Eileen turns to unsavory company, including a pimp named Tom (Christopher Walken). As Arthur and Joan struggle to make their marriage and business work and Eileen tries to make it on the streets, all the characters increasingly turn to vivid fantasies as a way to escape their difficult realities.moreless
