Barry Egan (Adam Sandler) is a small business owner and the unfortunate only son in a family of seven daughters. Their manipulations and treatment of Barry have made him unable to find and keep a real relationship, and have caused him to suffer from fits of rage from time to time. Then one day, he sees a bizarre car accident, finds a harmonium (an instrument similar to an organ) on the street, and meets Lena Leonard (Emil Watson), a woman his sister Elizabeth (Mary Lynn Rajskub) works with. He's attracted to Lena and wants to find a way to have a relationship with her, but when he calls a phone sex hotline to get advice, he finds himself caught up in an extortion scheme, which stresses their relationship even further.
