- movie Description
Selena is a 1997 biographical film about Selena Quintanilla, a popular Latina singer who became a star in the Tejano music scene and was poised for international celebrity when her life was cut short in 1995. The movie opens as the adult Selena (Jennifer Lopez) sings at a sold-out concert at the Houston Astrodome and then flashes back to Selena's childhood in Corpus Christi, Texas. Selena learns English as her first language and only later learns to speak Spanish. Despite her shortcomings in the Spanish language and the challenges she will face in the male-dominated Tejano music industry, the young Selena (Becky Lee Meza) is encouraged by her father, Abraham (Panchito Gomez), to develop her musical talent and create a band. When Abraham hires Chris Perez (John Seda) to join as a guitarist, Chris and Selena fall in love despite Abraham's objections. Selena becomes more and more popular, but a conflict with her fan club's president, Yolanda Salvidar (Lupe Ontiveros), threatens to unravel her success.moreless
