- movie Description
Slap Shot is a 1977 sports comedy written by Nancy Dowd and directed by George Roy Hill. The Charleston Chiefs are a struggling minor league hockey team in an industrial city experiencing economic hardship. The team is dead last in the Federal League, it is staffed by players who would prefer to be autoworkers and faces bankruptcy. The team's coach and most veteran player Reg Dunlop (Paul Newman) tries to keep the team operating in spite of apathetic owners and declining attendance. When the half-crazed Hanson Brothers (Jeff & Steve Carlson, David Hanson), are hired the team's fortune takes a turn for the better. It turns out in hockey, winning is not the draw, violence is. As the Hanson brother's unique brand of ultra-aggressive playing starts to draw more fans, the team gets a boost in confidence and begins to win games. The winning streak then becomes a rallying point for the community after it receives news that the local mill will close. However, as revenues increase it becomes clear that the team's owners have other plans. Dunlop then devises his own plan to save the team and give the community a lift in spirits, or failing that, stick it to the owners.moreless
