  • Summer of '42 is a 1971 drama starring Gary Grimes and Jennifer O'Neil and adapted from the memoirs of screenwriter Herman Raucher. Grimes plays the young "Hermie" Raucher, who spends his 1942 summer on Nantucket Island off the coast of New England. Hermie is 15 years old and quickly becoming a man. On the island with his two friends, he dreams of losing his virginity, but doesn't know how to. He strikes up a friendship with a young bride whose husband has just left to fight overseas in the war, and through his new friend he begins to learn the wonders and tragedies of adulthood. Composer Michael Legrand provides the film's original score, for which he won an Academy Award in 1971. Summer of '42 is a gripping coming-of-age tale that saw huge box office success upon its release and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.moreless
