  • That Uncertain Feeling, like many of the classic romantic comedies of Ernst Lubitsch, is a smart and sophisticated take on modern relationships. Jill Baker (Merle Oberon) is a bored housewife with a very vexing problem: recurring hiccups which begin whenever she discusses her businessman husband, Larry (Melvyn Douglas), and her stalled marriage. She is reluctantly persuaded by her friend Margie Stallings (Olive Blakeney) to visit a renowned psychoanalyst, Dr. Vengard (Alan Mowbray). But it's a chance meeting with an odd pianist in the doctor's waiting room that captures her attention. Soon, her hiccups are gone, she is in love with pianist Alexander Sebastian (Burgess Meredith), and the Bakers are divorcing. But Larry is not ready to give up on his wife, and strategizes with his business partner Jones (Harry Davenport) and their secretary Sally (Eve Arden) on how to win his wife back from the eccentric musician. Suddenly, Jill is forced to decide between a life of uncertain freedom with Alexander and boring but safe familiarity with Larry.moreless
