  • The Band Wagon is a romantic musical comedy directed by Vincente Minnelli and released in 1953. Tony Hunter (Fred Astaire) is an accomplished actor, dancer, and singer who is depressed that the news media have begun to ignore him in favor of younger stars. To lift Tony out of the dumps, his close friends Lily (Nanette Fabray) and Lester Martin (Oscar Levant) suggest that he star in a musical they're producing. Tony excitedly agrees, hoping that this will get his name back in the newspapers. His euphoria is short lived, however. The Martins have also hired Jeffrey Cordova (Jack Buchanan), a snobbish and avant-garde director whose extravagant demands soon threaten the entire show. What was supposed to be a musical comedy is now a contemporary treatment of Goethe's "Faust," and opening night is only a few days away. Tony and the Martins must find a way to salvage the production before Cordova utterly destroys it.moreless
