  • The Climb is a 1998 drama about the triumph of the human spirit, set in Baltimore at the end of the 1950s. John Langer (John Hurt) has all but given up on life. He is an elderly chain-smoking alcoholic left with nothing but memories and his biting wit. Unexpectedly, John's young neighbor, Danny (Gregory Smith), comes into his life. Danny is a talented athlete with a bright future, but like John, Danny is plagued by fears and doubts. Danny's father, Earl (David Strathairn), did not enlist in the army during World War II. As a result, Danny worries that his community views him as a coward. Danny resolves to make his father proud and prove his own courage; his plan is to climb a local water tower. When Danny calls on John to help him, the old man reluctantly becomes part of a young boy's daring plan. Whether or not Danny succeeds in his quest, it becomes clear that everyone involved will be forever changed by the experience.moreless
