  • The Crying Game, a 1992 drama directed by Neil Jordan, is set against a backdrop of ongoing tension between the Irish Republican Army and the British army. Fergus (Stephen Rea), a brooding, reluctant "volunteer" of the IRA, helps kidnap a black British soldier, Jody (Forest Whitaker), stationed in Northern Ireland. The IRA kidnapped Jody in an attempt to leverage the release of imprisoned IRA operatives. Unexpected complications arise, including the growing friendship of Fergus and Jody. Jody pressures Fergus to agree that if Jody dies, Fergus will check on his girlfriend, Dil (Jaye Davidson). Jody escapes prison, only to be killed accidentally by a British army truck. The British army discovers the IRA enclave, Fergus flees to London, and the British army hunts for Fergus to detain him on kidnapping charges. Meanwhile, Fergus' former girlfriend, Jude (Miranda Richardson), is also pursuing him because he knows too much about the IRA to fall into the hands of the British authorities. Fergus tracks down Jody's girlfriend and they develop a mutual attraction. As with other aspects of the movie, all is not what it seems.moreless
