- movie Description
The Dish is a 2000 film about the unsung efforts of a small Australian town in the worldwide broadcast of the first moon landing in 1969. Parkes, Australia is the home of the largest radio telescope dish in the Southern Hemisphere and is being used by NASA to track the maiden moon flight. The telescope operator is Cliff Buxton (Sam Neill), a quiet but intelligent man whose wife died the year before. Helping him in operating the dish are two assistants, Glenn (Tom Long) and Mitch (Kevin Harrington), and an uptight NASA representative, Al Burnett (Patrick Warburton). Meanwhile, Glenn begins a tentative relationship with a local girl, Janine (Eliza Szonert). Other subplots include the political maneuverings of the town's mayor, Bob McIntyre (Roy Billing), as the drunk prime minister pays a visit, and the comic adventures of the dish's security officer (Tayler Kane). This genial comedy is directed by Rob Strich and loosely based on real events.moreless
