  • The Glenn Miller Story is a 1954 biographical drama about the big band leader starring James Stewart. The film begins with Miller (James Stewart) as a struggling trombone player, trying to form his own band and play his own compositions. He finally meets Ben Pollack (playing himself) through his friend, Chummy MacGregor (Harry Morgan) and is asked to join the popular band. Two years later, Glenn is ready to start a band on his own. He proposes to his girlfriend, Helen (June Allyson), and they move to New York to start a family. Glenn forms his own band and makes a worldwide splash with "Moonlight Serenade." He quickly ascends to a top spot in the swing era with such hits as "In the Mood" and "Chattanooga Choo Choo." When the United States joins World War II, Glenn enlists in the Army so that he can play for the allied troops. The film features several noted musicians of the era playing themselves, such as Louis Armstrong, Gene Krupa and Lionel Hampton.moreless
