The Real: Rucker Parks Legends
- movie Description
The Real: Rucker Parks Legends is a 2006 documentary telling the story behind Rucker Park, a famous basketball court for disadvantaged youths in Harlem. Rucker Park is named after Holcombe Rucker, a former New York City Parks employee. In 1950, he started a basketball tournament league after school in order to keep kids off the streets and help them aim for a better life. His efforts inspired a generation of youths, some of whom went on to play professional basketball. After Rucker passed away, a few of his former pupils formed the "Each One Teach One" program. The program matches youths with some of basketball's legends, such as Julius Erving and Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, for one on one sessions. The Real: Rucker Parks Legends tells the story of the impact the program has had on kids in Harlem, and how Rucker Park has influenced not only basketball but hip hop culture as well.moreless
