Set during the Second World War, Norman Pitkin (Norman Wisdom) is a bumbling road repairman working for loudmouth supervisor Mr. Grimsdale (Edward Chapman) outside a British army base. After Pitkin and Grimsdale raise the ire of army Sergeant Loder (Campbell Singer), they are ordered to report for military duty. Following a stint at the Boville camp, the duo winds up repairing roads in France where Grimsdale is promptly captured by the enemy German forces. Meanwhile, Pitkin falls in love with Lesley Cartland (Honor Blackman), a waitress at a French caf''. Norman quickly discovers he bears a striking resemblance to Grimsdale's captor, the ruthless German General Schreiber (Norman Wisdom).
