  • Up Periscope is a 1959 World War II thriller directed by Gordon Douglas. The film revolves around an American military operation to obtain Japanese cypher tables from a heavily guarded radio station on Kosrae, an island located in Micronesia. The film begins with Lt. Kenneth Braden (James Garner) being called to duty during leave. He is initially surprised by the unexpected order but follows it and reports to Commander Paul Stevenson (Edmond O'Brien), who is using Braden to replace a dead "frogman", or military-trained scuba diver. Braden discovers that his recent girlfriend, Sally Johnson (Andra Martin), was actually an intelligence officer ordered to determine his readiness for the mission. The crew mans Commander Stevenson's submarine and sets out for Micronesia. Lt. Braden learns that he is expected to swim a great distance in order to avoid detection by the Japanese naval forces. Braden accepts the mission and sets out for the radio station where he finds a few surprises. The film was based on the novel by Robb White.moreless
