Ken Russell, Rex Ingram
- movie Description
Valentino is director Ken Russell's 1977 depiction of the life and death of pop icon Rudolph Valentino. The film opens with splashes of the newspaper headlines announcing the sudden death of the 31-year-old actor and sex symbol. It then cuts to actual newsreel showing the hysteric mob of fans crowding the streets trying to pay their respects at his funeral. Here is where storytelling takes over and newsreel morphs into filmmaking. Inside the opulent funeral home, Valentino (Rudolf Nureyev) lies in repose. While greedy movie executives lament their losses, the many women of Valentino's life enter the scene to tell, through flashbacks, the story of his rise to fame. Most notable are silent screen star Alla Nazimova (Leslie Caron) and Valentino's second wife, Natasha Rambova (Michelle Phillips). Numerous ball room dance scenes, including one where Valentino and Vaslav Nijinsky (Anthony Dowell) dance a tango, bring all the lavish style of the Jazz Age to life.moreless
