  • movie Description
  • Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? captures a volatile late night party hosted by a couple enmeshed in a 20-year-old love-hate relationship. George (Richard Burton) is a middle-aged history professor at a New England college. His wife, Martha (Elizabeth Taylor), is the daughter of the university's president. This unbalanced arrangement, exacerbated by excessive consumption of alcohol, fuels their verbally abusive marriage. One night around 2 A.M., George and Martha return home from a get-together, inebriated and disheveled. Martha has invited over a young faculty couple, Nick (George Segal) and Honey (Sandy Dennis), for a nightcap. However, these mild-mannered guests are soon pained and perplexed by the older couple's constant crossfire of drunken, angry insults. The most incendiary topic is the couple's unseen, fifteen-year-old son. As a film that is equal parts drama, suspense and dark comedy, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? earned thirteen Academy Award nominations and appears on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 greatest American movies.moreless
