  • Wolfen, released in 1981 by Orion Pictures through Warner Brothers, provides a new twist on the legend of the werewolf. Set in New York City, detective Dewey Wilson (Albert Finney) must solve a set of bizarre and brutal murders where the victims seem to have been killed by animals. His investigation of the deaths of a real estate tycoon, his coke-binging wife, and a wino, leads him to discover a Native American legend about wolf spirits. Soon, he finds a pack of intelligent and savage shape shifters living in the South Bronx. The beings are not the werewolves of legend, but a separate race that descended from wolves and live secretly with man. The film is based on the 1978 novel, The Wolfen, by Whitley Strieber. It includes an early use of an in-camera effect to portray the wolf. It is also the film debut of Gregory Hines who portrayed Whittington in the film.moreless
