  • You Can't Take It With You is a screwball comedy from 1940 directed by Frank Capra. Tony Kirby (James Stewart) is the son of wealthy landowner, Anthony Kirby (Edward Arnold). When he falls in love with his secretary, Alice Sycamore (Jean Arthur), she takes him home to meet her eccentric family. Tony finds that Alice's family spends more time on their creative pursuits than on making money, which is the exact opposite of his family. Martin Vanderhof (Lionel Barrymore) heads the zany household as thegrandfather who does not believe in paying income taxes, nor does he believe that life should be squandered for the pursuit of money. The members of his family take up ballet, paint, make fireworks and a host of other hobbies that don't include making money. The house the family lives in is one that Anthony Kirby needs to tear down in order to build his factory, but the owner won't sell. Little does he know, his son is in love with Alice Sycamore who lives in the same house. When the Kirby family goes to meet Martin Vanderhof and the rest of the clan, the two opposing cultures collide.moreless
