ABC Orders a Full Season of Connie Britton (and Nashville)

The season of television kindness continues, as networks just don't have the heart to cancel cute, little programs like they have in the past. ABC just ordered a full season of Nashville, the positively reviewed show that isn't the breakout hit many suspected it would be. The country-music soap to will now live at least until May, with a 22-episode first season.

In its most recent episode, Nashville notched a 2.0 rating in the adult demo and just over 6 million total viewers, according to totally antiquated Nielsen statistics. That was a slight increase from the previous week, but still below the drama's season average.

So why is Nashville getting a full season? Technology! The show is picking up big DVR gains, and it looks like networks are finally accepting that this DVR thing is here to stay. The most recent Live +7 Days figures show the October 24 episode of Nashville picking up 60 percent of its final rating (a much more impressive 3.2) from delayed viewing, one of the highest gainers of that week, percentage-wise. Add to that some extra cash from sales of the show's original songs through iTunes and more, and it's a lot easier to understand why ABC decided to push the "pickup" button.

The full-season order is the second for ABC's new shows; The Neighbors surprised us by winning the network's first. ABC has also ordered a full season of Scandal after an initial second-season order of 13 episodes. 666 Park Avenue and Last Resort are still awaiting a decision but face a harder journey toward Pickuptown. Even with DVR figures factored in, 666 Park Avenue climbed to a 2.5 rating and Last Resort broke the surface at a 2.1. Yeah, another submarine pun. Sorry.

Happy about Nashville, The Neighbors and Scandal. Hopeful for Last Resort. 666 Park Avenue IMO isn't as strong, but truly hopes it picks up speed -- so far it's almost, but not quite.

The television season that WOULD NOT DIE pt 3: ABC makes the dumbest call of all time. DVR views are WORTHLESS to advertisers because DVR viewers DON'T WATCH ADVERTISEMENTS. That's like cooking up more $40 Kobe-style beef chimichangas in anticipation of the rush because all the free samples got taken.

I hope Park Avenue gets a full season. It's getting really interesting and I can't stop watching. It'd be ashame to see it go so soon without any closure.
