And the Best TV Pilot of the Last 15 Years Is...

By Cory Barker

Sep 24, 2013

We've come to the end, ladies and gentlemen. After four weeks and thousands of votes, you've helped crown the best pilot of the last 15 years. The results of the final round aren't especially surprising, but the deserving pilot came through victorious.

You winner is... Lost, of course. Breaking Bad's cinderella run came to an end, and it wasn't even close. Lost tallied about 3,000 more votes than Breaking Bad, which means that Lost blew through this competition from start to finish. Counting all the rounds together, Lost defeated its opponents (AliasThe Walking DeadHow I Met Your Mother, and BrBa) by a total of about 15,000 votes. Of course, Breaking Bad was no slouch in toppling The SopranosThe Shield, and Pushing Daisies on its way to the championship. There's no doubt that Breaking Bad is a much better show than Lost, and BrBa was certainly aided in this competition by its currently airing final season, but as we've discussed repeatedly over the last month, this was all about the first episode and the first episode only. In that regard, Lost is better, and I would argue that it's much better. It deserved to win this competition, as it deserves to win most pilot-focused competitions. Thank you for doing the right thing.

In the battle for third place, you crazy How I Met Your Mother fans came out big-time, helping the the CBS comedy stomp Pushing Daisies by about the same margin as Lost defeating Breaking BadHIMYM's run in this competition surprised me, particularly its victory over Arrested Development in the second round, but that's what happens in competitions like this. And to be fair, the HIMYM pilot is very, very good—especially for a comedy pilot. Is it better than Pushing Daisies' first episode? In my opinion no, but the shows are so different on a fundamental level that there's no real reason to get worked up about the results. It's third place.

As we come to the end of the competition, I want to thank you for voting and commenting along the way. Your participation here makes it more likely that we'll do more competitions like this in the future.

Yay Lost the deserving winner. I should add that even though I prefer HIMYM to Pushing Daisies, I think Pushing Daisies was a much better pilot. Arrested Development was about ten times better than both those pilots but people voting on this poll have short term memories.

So glad the hype didn't push BrBa all the way through. Hooray for Lost. Maybe now I can stop being offended by and actually start seriously watching Breaking Bad.

Lost is the best show ever.I would never even consider watching Breaking Bad,never have, never will.

    that is an absolute shame

Actually I consider it my business what I spend my time and money on.I can decide for myself what I enjoy watching without outside influences. So I don't consider it a shame because due to what I know of the show I know I wouldn't enjoy it.

For me Lost is the greatest TV series EVER!!! Breaking Bad is around 3/4 after Lost, The Wire and The X-Files.

"There's no doubt that Breaking Bad is a much better show than Lost"

WRONG! That's your opinion, Many would disagree.

Breaking Bad is an incredible TV show, and maybe its quality has been more consistent throughout its run, But Lost broke new ground in TV, No TV show before or since has sparked so much intrigue, and discussion. Lets also not forget Lost had to make double the episodes of BrBa, And they had to deal with a writers strike mid show.

Here's how I break down rating LOST Vs BrBa.

    --------------------Season 1--Season 2--Season 3--S4---S5----S6--Total----Avge
    LOST--------------9.4/10-------9.5/10------9.6/10-----9.4---8.8--8.9---55.6-----9.26
    BrBa---------------9.0/10-------9.0/10------9.0/10-----9.2---9.4---------45.6-----9.12

So, As you can see IMO, There's not much difference between the shows all things considered, But LOST will always have a bigger part of my heart and my mind.

Totally agree man, Most of the people that "Hate" on Lost still believe the myth that "They didn't answer questions" or "They were dead all along" LOL..

Pushing Daisies should definately have made it into the finale, although only to lose to Lost. Breaking Bad's pilot should have never made it this far although the shows is brilliant. I dont really get the repeated mentioning of AD in this context. Its one of my favourite shows of all time but I just didnt think the pilot wasnt anything out of the ordinary other than matching the quality of the show in general.

The most hilarious TV pilot I recall was Reaper.. Too bad the show only lasted for 2 seasons. Ray Wise as the devil.. Dust Devil to suck up evil? :)

  • hurtlocker10 Sep 27, 2013

Maybe we should do a "worst finale" poll next? Lost would probably win it too but I'd vote for Dexter. The whole last season was a slap in the face but the finale was a proper boot in the gonads :(

  • DADDY_DAVE Sep 29, 2013

LOST's Finale was excellent on so many levels, Shame many people misunderstood it.

  • hurtlocker10 Sep 30, 2013

LOL for a start, I was perfectly content with the finale, so you're barking at the wrong guy. With that being said, you should deal with the fact that it wasn't "excellent" for everyone. You can't just say that anyone unhappy with the ending simply misunderstood it.

  • DADDY_DAVE Sep 30, 2013

LOL.. I never said "anyone unhappy with the ending simply misunderstood it." BUT it is a fact that most people that were unhappy DID MISUNDERSTAND IT.

PS I agree with you on Dexter, That ending was a true cop out, Showing a lack of balls, Dexter should have died or been found out by the people in his life.
