News Briefs: Becki Newton Is Getting Weird at Fox

By Kaitlin Thomas

Feb 22, 2014

... Ugly Betty and How I Met Your Mother alum Becki Newton has been cast to star opposite Happy Endings' vet Zachary Knighton in the Fox comedy pilot Weird Loners. Newton will play Caryn Goldfarb, a dental hygienist and one of four strangers who unexpectedly end up as roommates in a townhouse in Queens. I'm sorry, but I don't buy Newton in this role for one second. Weird? Loner? Yeah right. Still, with both Newton and Knighton signed on, this weird little pilot is starting to sound more appealing by the minute. [TV Line]

... The Lonely Island's Akiva Schaffer will spend some extra time with his fellow Islander Andy Samberg when he directs Brooklyn Nine-Nine's season finale, which starts production next week and will air on Tuesday, March 25. Schaffer is the last member of the comedy trio to stop by the 99th Precinct; Jorma Taccone helmed helped the series' Thanksgiving episode. [THR]

... The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has finally realized that it effed up when it combined the Emmys miniseries and TV movie categories three years ago and will now reverse that decision. The split comes as a result of a petition that was started by FX—I assume it was posted on, like all important petitions are—and signed by several big names in the TV industry, including HBO. This is really great news, but where the hell is the petition to separate the Golden Globe supporting acting categories? That's a petition I will gladly sign. [Emmys]

... A&E's Beyond Scared Straight—a docuseries following at-risk teens who get up close and personal with convicted felons while spending quality time at their local jails—will return for its sixth season on Friday, February 28 at 10pm. I don't want to tell you what to watch (just kidding, of course I do), but Hannibal Season 2 also premieres on Friday, February 28 at 10pm. Choose wisely. [A&E via press release]

... Molly Shannon is set to co-star in ABC's new untitled family comedy pilot from Brian Gallivan (Are You There, Chelsea?). The potential series follows Teddy, a father who moves his family to New Hampshire and opens a group of tourist cottages. Shannon will play Cathleen Burke, Teedy's wife and the mother of his six kids (SIX! KIDS!) who's kind of pissed when her husband quits his job without consulting her. In someone's defense here, he probably did try to consult her, and then she probably rolled over and told him "not tonight" because ohmygodsixkids. [THR]

... Charlie Cox (Boardwalk Empire's Owen Slater) has landed a role in CBS's untitled drama pilot that's being produced by John CusackThe project explores the world of power and money on Wall Street, and Cox will play Jackson, a hedge fund trader who fought in Iraq and has a general desire to do good. Gee, I really hope Wall Street doesn't change him. [Deadline]

... Tim Meadows, of Saturday Night Live and the widely accepted best movie of all time Mean Girls, has been cast in NBC's new pilot Marry Me. The single-camera comedy stars Casey Wilson (Happy Endings) and Ken Marino (Party Down) as a newly engaged couple. Meadows plays Kevin, a good friend of Wilson's character Annie. [Deadline]

... Steve Kazee, who won a Tony Award for Once, will star opposite Morena Baccarin in ABC's medical drama pilot Warriors. He'll play play Clay, the husband of Baccarin's character Tory who just returned from a nine-month tour in Afghanistan. [TV Line]

... So many people have signed on to guest-star in the second season of Ray Donovan that you'd think they were giving away free cake over there. On second thought, free cake might be all the show has to offer; I know I'd be more inclined to watch it if it were accompanied by Showtime-sponsored cake. Anyway, Kip Pardue (Mad MenRemember the Titans) is the latest actor to join the Showtime drama. He'll play an FBI agent names Volchek who works for Hank Azaria's big shot character James Cochran. Maybe he'll get me some cake. [THR]

... Mike Tyson will appear as himself in an episode of Franklin & Bash. [EW]

... Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey will lend his voice to Phineas and Ferb in a special Grand Prix-themed episode on March 1. I've been told March 1 marks a made-up holiday called Platypus Day. Is this a thing now? Are we just inventing our own holidays? Because if so, I officially declare No Pants Friday a thing. [Disney via press release]

... Ioan Gruffudd (Ringer) has joined the new ABC drama pilot Forever, about a New York medical examiner who will literally live forever. I don't even have the energy to make fun of this one, guys. Hit the comments with your own jokes. [TV Line]

... I'm not saying this will now be's spoiler policy, but EW makes some good points regarding the rules of details about TV shows on the interwebs. It's definitely worth a read. [EW]

Very good article on the spoilers. There will never be a standard set of rules though especially on the internet.

I hope Becki Newton gets a good show which will run for a while. Her shows always get cancelled but she is so nice to look at.

Heroes is coming back. HEROES IS COMING BACK!!!!

  • RadiioGirl Feb 23, 2014

Speaking of Becki Newton, does anybody know if The Goodwin Games are cancelled or renewed? I want to know! That show was great.

  • WavSlave Feb 23, 2014

It was cancelled quite a while ago. In fact, given how long Fox put off airing it, I think they knew it was a lemon with no hope of renewal right from the start.

Spoilers. Yes, yes, No need to be a douchebag about it. But there is a fine line, books are fair game. However, let us all remember especially those that insist on absolutely no spoilers what so ever. These are TV shows, no need to get butt hurt over it.

Couldn't have found a better picture of Molly Shannon, huh?

  • IndianaMom Feb 22, 2014

Years ago has a spoiler alert thing for our blogs and comments. The reader would click on the bracketed SPOILERS and the line would open up so they could read it. I deal with spoilers by trying to avoid articles about a show until I see it. It doesn't always work, but I deal with it. I guess British TV doesn't worry about it. In a recent Graham Norton Show Graham said who the killer was on Broadchurch and nobody gasped.

After reading about Sleepy Hollow's premise I rolled my eyes and thought WTF is this preposterous insanity of a show? And yet, I was wrong and it turned out to be pretty good (at least IMO) so I may give FOREVER a chance esp. as Gruffudd is a decent actor and he was watchable even in that disaster that was Ringer (sorry Buffy! I so wanted it to be good and do well...)

  • Taccado Feb 22, 2014

It's a shame that Ioan Gruffudd is continuing his losing streak. He is a decent actor but has never had a noteworthy role, except in those two Fantastic Four films which were less than fantastic. And now he is joining a show that will be dead on arrival. I guess will perform the autopsy to find out cause of death.

Great job finding the absolute worst image of Molly Shannon ever. What, her rectal exam video wasn't clear enough for you, Kaitlin?

  • JT_Kirk Feb 22, 2014

I disagree, her skin doesn't look as bad from the harsh sun in that one; nor her neck skin as wrecked, nor her eyes as glazed. It's brutal, no doubt, but not quite as brutal.

    Funny = up-vote.
