Celebrity High-Five: Community Star Yvette Nicole Brown's 5 Favorite TV Shows

For this latest edition of Celebrity High-Five, we welcome Community's Yvette Nicole Brown, who plays Shirley, a Jesus-loving mom with a dark past. When we asked Yvette via email to name her top five TV shows, she not only listed her current picks, but her all-time favorites—series like The Cosby Show, The Golden Girls, and The Carol Burnett Show.

"These shows were my comedy master class," explains Yvette. "When I was growing up. I learned how to be the lovable, smartest person in the room from Phylicia Rashad. I learned physical comedy and the joy of facial expressions from Bill Cosby and Carol Burnett. And most importantly, I learned how to be a team player in an awesome ensemble by watching the generous give-and-take of Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, Estelle Getty, and Betty White. Any episode of any season of any of these shows is a comedy GIFT."

Read on to find out what shows she enjoys watching now, and why each one made her list.

"Broadway singing and dancing AND my good friend Leslie Odom Jr. playing Sam make a Monday MUST see for me! Debra Messing is heartbreaking as Julia. And Ivy and Karen's weekly battles for Marilyn supremacy have me glued to my seat! Did I mention there's singing and dancing?!"

The Voice

"Good voices, great chemistry amongst the judges, and those GLORIOUS red chairs?! Yes, please! The Voice wins with its gut-wrenching personal stories that make you root for the contestants along with a game-changing format switch every three or four weeks (blind auditions! Battle rounds! Live show!) that makes you feel like you're watching a brand-new show. Can't get enough!"

The Killing

"I know, I know. We were kinda left hanging last season. But I have faith that we will find out who killed poor Rosie Larsen. But even if they dupe us again, I've fallen so in love (and hate) with the creepy and lost characters in this awesome drama that I'm just gonna take the ride. I have heard that we'll know who did the heinous deed by the end of this season though...so there's that! ;)"

"This show is my new OBSESSION! Shonda Rhimes has crafted a wonderfully intense character study set in Washington, D.C. and Kerry Washington is a force of nature as Olivia Pope. It's so exciting to see an African-American female as the lead in a network drama. It's been a while since that's happened. It's about time! Thank you, Shonda!"

Parks And Recreation

"I wanna live in Pawnee! There, I said it. Leslie Knope and her rag-tag group of co-workers and friends care (well, maybe not Ron Swanson), they believe in doing the right thing (okay, maybe not Tom), and they're all ridiculously funny (no caveat there!). "Treat Yo'self," as my buddy Retta's character Donna says, and tune in to just one episode and you will be HOOKED! I promise!"

What do you think of Yvette's picks? Did any of them surprise you?

Community airs Thursday nights at 8pm on NBC.

me love Smash! and I agree with everything she said about The Killing. I need to know who the hell killed that girl! Can't wait to see what the next case will be like.

Well, I'm no network suit but I highly doubt The Killing will be back for a third season. The first season angered too many viewers by failing to deliver on its one and only promise. Yes, they'll finally give us our answer at the end of the second season but I think their self-inflicted wound will ultimately prove to be fatal. From what I've heard, its numbers have been pretty bad.

boring she doesn't have good taste in TV

  • Moron_Inc Apr 20, 2012

    Parks should be number one.

Oh man, numbers 1, 2, and 5 reek of network synergy, I doubt that's what it is but it is too funny. Her #4 I fear will get canceled soon, I haven't watched it (I'm burned out on that kind of show right now) but ABC's marketing just feels desperate and I have seen them do that before. Man, she unashamedly name-dropped a ton in these, you don't see that too often with celebs, reminds me of Kathy Griffin except with sincerity.

Anyway, obviously Yvette and I have little tastes in common, but it's a cool list, and suggests there's a lot of the actress in her character as I can see Shirley into this list as well, minus the celeb name-dropping obviously. Her call-out to facial expression acting from Cosby and Carol is awesome, it is reflected how she can ride such a wide range so quickly with her character. And a Golden Girls shout, that's fantastic. This article could have been twice as long and I'd still feel like it could have been even longer.

Geez. You think you could have found a more recent Parks & Recreation photo, one that doesn't have Paul Schneider in it? He hasn't been in the series for three years now.

Woo, Parks and Rec + Community! I love it when my two currently favorite shows support one another, like Michael Schur talking amicably about Community yesterday.

Now I have to watch "Scandal". I was wondering if I'd take the plunge or not and Yvette convinced me.
