Comic-Con 2010: Psych

By Stefanie Lee

The panel: Psych-sters James Roday, Dule Hill, Timothy Omundson, Corbin Bernson, Maggie Lawson, Kirsten Nelson, and creator Steve Franks. Moderated by Andy Berman, a Psych producer.

What they talked about: Disclaimer: I don’t watch Psych. But I really want to after attending this panel, because there was a lot of talk of pineapples, awesome hair, and bro love. There was also an awesome Comic-Con-targeted, inside-joke-filled intro video featuring Lost’s Nestor Carbonell and Tears for Fears’ Curt Smith, who then made a live aappearance with Hill and Roday to sing “Shout.” And there was even a little catch-up-on-Psych video for those of us not in the know. And a blooper reel at the end. Basically, USA Network had their shit together.

Most valuable panelist: You’d think I’d say Hill or Roday, right? Well, they were pretty awesome. But I think Omundson had the best one-liners. And Maggie Lawson’s comparison of Shawn Spencer and James Roday was pretty priceless: The first is a boy, the second is a man. That’s all I’m going to say.

Best question from the audience: When asked, “Is there going to be a marriage between any of the characters in upcoming seasons?” Franks replied, “Uh, no.” James Roday was pretty much speechless when one audience member asked, “In this show, you raise your hand to your temple a lot. Do you do that in real life?” And then there was this one to Tim Omundson: “Two of my favorite childhood movies were Luck of the Irish and Model Behavior. What advice would you give to an aspiring actor about being selective?” (His response: “Daddy’s gotta make some bread.”)

Missing in action: No one. Except for all the extras that have been on the show over the last five years.

Most exciting news: There are going to be some sweet-ass guest stars next season, Carbonell being one of ‘em. (Though he may get in the way of Shawn and Juliet, uh-oh!) Look forward to Adam Rodriguez, Freddie Prinze, Jr., and Karl Weathers, too.

Quotables: There were simply too many to keep track of. I’ll instead highlight the awesome topics discussed, such as what Roday, Nathan Fillion, and Simon Baker would talk about over dinner (“We’d start with something gentlemanly like martinis or cigars. The first topic of conversation would be hair.”) and whose hairline (Roday’s or Omundson’s) would win an arm-wrestling match.

But wait, there’s more! Tim Omundson breaks character more than his castmates. Dule Hill wanted to come to Comic-Con dressed as Papa Smurf, but it’s a good thing he didn’t because he wouldn’t have been able to perform that splendid tap-dancing number at the end. Badass.

The big picture: Attending this panel made me want to watch this show, plain and simple. The actors have fun with each other, they appreciate their fans, and they make a great show. Who could ask for anything more from a group o’ panelists?

Psych is a great show you should definitely check it out. It is fun and entertaining and will always make you laugh. The characters are great and have great chemistry together, and after five years I can say this show keeps getting better and better.

I had completely forgotten about Maggie and Tim's previous forays into the deep, dark world of the DCOM. Good show to whomever asked that question.

Even the creator jokes with "The Mentalist" rip-off in the series :) Great show, indeed... Awesome cast, fun characters, witty script, just awesome :)
