HBO Is Developing a TV Series Based on Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island

Now that True Blood has fizzled out and The Newsroom and Boardwalk Empire are heading into their respective final seasons, HBO is in the business of developing new content. Sure, the network has Game of Thrones and True Detective and The Leftovers, but its drama well is evaporating quicker than California's water supply. Which is likely why the network is looking adapt Martin Scorsese's 2010 film Shutter Island, itself based on a book by Dennis Lehane, into a series tentatively titled Ashecliffe.

According to Deadline, Ashecliffe would take place prior to the events of the movie, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Edward "Teddy" Daniels, a U.S. Marshal investigating the disappearance of a mental patient named Rachel Solando from the isolated Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane.

The show would focus on the hospital's founders, who developed the methods of treatment used at Ashecliffe, by diving into their various secrets and misdeeds. The current plan is to have Scorsese direct a pilot written by Lehane.

Ashecliffe isn't Scorsese's first foray into HBO-produced television; he won an Emmy in 2011 for his direction of the Boardwalk Empire pilot, and he's currently working on an untitled 1970s rock 'n' roll project for the network with Mick Jagger and Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter.

Would you watch Ashecliffe?

    I'll pass.

I still do not know why HBO would not do a spin off of Boardwalk Empire. There are just so many characters and stories that could warrant a spin off.

I thought the 70's rock and roll show Scorcese is doing for HBO had already been mostly cast. The cast list I've seen is pretty damn impressive. Bobby Canavale, Olivia Wilde, Ray Ramano, 'Dice' Clay, Ato Essendoh, Mick's son James Jagger to name a few. Period piece about the 70's rock/punk scene in New York City ...... That looks a bit more interesting than another crime drama whose lead character is a US Marshall. Been there, done that. One more year with Raylan Givens!

The movie was great, although I'd rather see HBO (and a lot of other networks) developing something new instead of another movie-adaption. But since it's HBO and I watch/plan to watch/watched all their drama series except for True Blood I'll watch it. Also I don't see how Martin Scorsese + HBO could possibly produce a bad (or even just ok) series.

Oh god no, please, anything but this. There are very few recent movies that I've reacted against more strongly than this one, and I love most of Scorsese's work. This is just depressing.

Shutter Island was one of the movies that f*cks with your mind, but still it was a really incredible movie, totally interested for the TV show but hopefully without the open ending..

Mmm. I vote for Inception instead..

I take it they're getting rid of the twist ending.....

I don't remember much about the movie, a head trip, no doubt. I've got the book, and never read it, so maybe this is an excuse to.

As an aside, I haven't been interested in watching that untitled 1970's rock 'n' roll project HBO has in development, but I didn't realise Scorsese and Terence Winter would be involved. I may have to check it out.

I didn't like the movie, so the TV show seems like it'll be about as entertaining as an insurance seminar. Thanks, but no thanks.

I'll check back in when the next movie to series announcement is made
