HBO stays Hung, adds to Entourage

HBO's road to resurgence will involve more huge penises and Hollywood douches. The premium cable channel has announced the renewal the well-endowed comedy Hung, the movie-star lifestyle comedy Entourage, and smash sensation True Blood for extra seasons.

The news broke at the TCAs, currently being held in Pasadena, California, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hung gets a second season, Entourage a seventh, and True Blood a third.

Hung, about a man who becomes a gigolo thanks to his sizeable package, has received mixed reviews but good ratings. Ditto for the sixth season of Entourage, which sees a tamer version of the boys who usually cavort around Tinseltown. If both shows are going to last much longer, they're going to need an injection of creative energy.

True Blood's renewal -- which was first announced at Comic-Con by series creator Alan Ball -- was a no-brainer, as it's HBO's biggest hit since The Sopranos. As long as the show is loaded with vampires, gratuitous sex, and buckets of blood, it will be around for a while.

The future of Kiwi comedy Flight of the Comchords is still in doubt, however. HBO executives are eager to get it back in the lineup, but stars Jemaine Clement (who earned an Emmy nomination this year) and Bret McKenzie had have previously said that the most recent season would likely be their last, citing creative exhaustion (in addition to writing the show, a new season would mean the musicians would need to write an album's worth of new songs).

There's still no word on The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency or In Treatment, two critical favorites that haven't pulled in significant numbers.

Whew, after CW made me lose faith in television (well, it IS the CW) by cancelling Reaper, this is a breath of fresh air.

I mean, meh, I could do without Entourage, Piven is funny, but I don't really care about the movie star characters or their pithy "the good kind to have" problems, having lived in LA for several years.

But yeah, Hung does need some creative injection, however it has becom increasingly good as episodes rolled on. Also, True Blood being renewed is great, I don't love everything about the show but i'm hooked, and it needs to outlast crap like Twighlight (but seriously, no more Tara or Mary-Anne drama, Norse vampires and the such are far more interesting ;) ).

Now the only fly in the ointment is In Treatment, the one other show that HBO needs to bring back due to it's awesomeness, please dont dissapoint! (Eastbound Down and Out was good, I would like to see it return, giving HBO a full package of stuff I actually like to watch again). No.1 Ladies Detective Agency I would GLADLY sacrifice to make room for shows I actually enjoy.

Great news for Trueblood, which is an amazing show. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for In Treatment... the second season was really good.

I would like to see another season of flight of the conchords, even though season 2 wasn't as good as season 1. Having said that the finale of season 2 was great, but I realistically dont expect another season. Hung has the potential to be good, but I haven't seen it yet and Entourage is getting a bit old. I loved season 1 of true blood, but I am not so sure where they are going with season 2. It is still the best show to get a new season.

I can see Hung getting more depth in a variety of ways! Excuse the pun! There is a lot to this show and a lot of potential to explore!

I like Hung...it's getting better. TB was a given. Entourage is getting stale.

Well.. uh... there HAS been word on both The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and In Treatment, just a couple of days ago (http://www.thefutoncritic.com/news.aspx?id=8226). Since the former is produced by UK's BBC, HBO has just to wait and see.

I am pulling for In Treatment!
