It's almost heeeeeeeere. The Vampire Diaries' Klaus-centric spin-off The Originals, that is. The backdoor pilot is set to air as the April 25 episode of TVD, and as of today there's an official synopsis and a handful of episodic photos to peruse! Ahoy:

KLAUS RETURNS TO HIS PAST IN NEW ORLEANS — Acting on a mysterious tip that a plot is brewing against him in New Orleans, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) makes a trip to the town he and his family helped build. Klaus’s questions lead him to a reunion with his former protégé, Marcel (guest-star Charles Michael Davis), a charismatic vampire who has total control over the human and supernatural inhabitants of New Orleans. Determined to help his brother find redemption, Elijah (Daniel Gillies) follows Klaus and soon learns that Hayley (guest-star Phoebe Tonkin) has also come to the French Quarter searching for clues to her family history, and has fallen into the hands of a powerful witch named Sophie (guest star Daniella Pineda). Meanwhile, in Mystic Falls, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) continue with their plan for Elena (Nina Dobrev), while Katherine (Nina Dobrev) reveals a surprising vulnerability to Rebekah (Claire Holt) and asks her to deliver a message. Chris Grismer directed the episode written by Julie Plec (#420).

Okay, so there isn't all that much new info to go on. But there seems to be a lot of love out there for Elijah, and Klaus certainly has his moments. So there's definitely potential, right?

Anyway, here are those photos I promised you! Caution: There is a LOT of intent staring ahead.

Alright guys, go nuts. What's your excitement level for this thing?

Out of ALL the ladies from Mystic Falls WHY did they choose Hayley to be in the spinoff? I mean the only girl worse than her they could have chosen would have been the daughter of the dude who blew up the council (don't even remember her name, that is how uninteresting she is). Hayley is just, so annoying and cocky in a not so good way. I would prefer a new female honestly, maybe a cool WHITE witch? Just to spice it up?

as long as they intersect from time to time and have crossover episodes where damon and co have to go to new orleans or klaus has to come back to mystic falls sometime etc etc (buffy and angel had em right?) then Im completely ok with it

I already plan on checking out The Originals even though I'm on the fence over whether or not it should even be in existence. The fact of the matter is, with Klaus and Elijah, and okay Rebekah too I suppose, they made rich characters played by fantastic actors who easily became fan favorites whether they were being used adequately or not. In truth, they (Klaus and Bex to be more specific) overstayed their welcome on TVD, to the point where they being writing things around the characters rather than writing things for them. It's like Claire Holt, JoMo, and Daniel G did too great of a job selling us these vulnerable, charming, charismatic, and awesome characters, and as a result no one wanted to see them going including the writers etc, so they stuck around even though there was essentially nothing for them to do. They forcibly wrote them in storylines just to have them doing something and there...etc. It's a common problem with this show, which is how they end up with too many characters and not enough story lines being evenly distributed and plots that don't accommodate all of the characters. It's a testament to how great and also how flawed the writing is for this show.

I think the only reason we're in favor of The Originals is the fact that it frees up room on TVD which they desperately needed, but it still gives us these characters that the majority of the fans have come to adore. I can't pretend as though I'm not beyond thrilled that I'll still get to see JoMo and Daniel G every week playing two of my fave characters of the show as of present. Elijah in particular. But I'm wary over the premise, because I don't see what more story there is to tell for Klaus, where he's able to lead his own show, but I don't care, and I'm willing to find out. There has been a great deal of bickering over casting etc. I for one, am pleased over the casting for Klaus' protege Marcel, and on one hand I'm thrilled that they've already broken the racial barriers that TVD have constructed, but on the other hand I'm still craving an interesting story line to explain why they were constructed the way they were constructed to begin with, because knowing why most witches are black would just be interesting to me. I am still not pleased with Hayley though. I know Phoebe is a gem and everyone adores her, but Hayley as a character is poorly constructed, and terrible, and I don't know how they could possibly revamp her to make her any more interesting or likeable on The Originals.

I also understand why people fear that taking the originals away can have a negative impact on TVD. They've been a crutch for the show for the past two seasons. They've trimmed the fat already, but they've relied so heavily on all the "Fat " that they've trimmed that it makes one wonder how the show can fare without them. Jeremy and Alaric are gone. Bonnie is scarcely utilized, and Tyler is gone. Matt barely has presence. They've relied heavily on Klaus being the (not so) big bad with a great deal of reach that they often require some sort of help from, so much so that they often dangle Elena like a prize and use Caroline as bait, to strike a deal with "the devil". Rebekah has been used as the "bang buddy" when either Salvatore is trying to avoid thinking about Elena, and as the resident "bitchy" chick, and catalyst for stirring up mischief and drama. Klaus' chemistry and interactions with Caroline, Stefan, and Damon have been gems to watch even if there isn't much actually coming from it. Their roles haven't been exceptional as far as being necessary to the story and plots, but their presence has become such a fixture, and they've added so much humor, drama, and intrigue on their own that not having them around, the writers not having them to use as a crutch for storytelling or as breakaway stuff from the core three, well, I am genuinely curious, and kind of concerned of the effects that will have. I mean losing Alaric, another character whom you can tell wasn't meant to stay on nearly as long as he did, but became such a fan favorite and had such a charm of his own, that has had a lasting impact and affected the show a great deal. As much as I loved Jeremy, especially in the later seasons, his death was just as much of a plot device as his character was in general. Same can be said for Tyler in a way.

Hey, any reason to move on from Klaus is good in my book. He's kinda like Spike but Spike was much more cooler and likeable IMO. Anywho, I might watch the show for Elijah because he's my fav and maybe for Rebecca but Klaus himself....meh.

Ok I'm seeing alot of the same comments, that TVD will suffer cuz of the loss, I honestly disagree with that possibility. Klaus was the evil badass in seasons 2 and 3, and I was happy that the producers had the balls to kill him at seasons 3 end, but it seems TVD fans can be scary and producers are afraid. I think Klaus had become pointless throughout most of this season. I mean it looked like the body swap with Tyler was meant to go on longer along with Bonnie's reasoning behind it and resolution, but the producers caved and decided to not go on with an interesting story of Caroline unknowingly falling for "Klaus" in Tyler's body, I had originally thought that since it seemed Klaus's body was dead that the story with Caroline would have ended with her finding out Klaus is in Tyler's body and the only way to stop him would be to kill him along with Tyler and her facing the impossible situation of having to kill the man she loved and the man she may have come to love at the same time, but than I remembered that I liked that story the first time I watched it on Buffy, well not completely the same but hey don't judge!
I got off topic, anyway Klaus for the most part was just hanging around Mystiv Falls with nothing better to do than to pop up out of nowhere and be menacing to Tyler mostly. Than skulking some more to work with Damon and give info on The Five, went back to skulking with random pop ups to piss off Stefan about Elena. Than after some quality time with his "Dysfunctinal bunch of lunatic family" as Stefan put it, put himself in Jeremy's "Training" Finally after again popping of out of nowhere at the cabin where Jeremy was training, which led to making him the relevant big bad he used to be, which was the death first the knowledge of the hybrid planned rebellion and subsequent slaughter of the 12 and murdering Carol Lockwood. than the last straw was the death of dysfunctional lunatic Kol at the hands of the too short lived awesome "Gilbert sibling vampire hunters.
So before millions of Klaus fans send me death threats, I did say he became relevant and I get where the whole point of his presence has led up to. He first became the evil super big bad he was earlier, but not before being humbled first by Bonnie, I always enjoy the ultimate evil badass being taken down a notch. But now here is where it has gotten to what's coming next with Klaus and his interaction with Caroline while trapped in the Gilbert home. We all knew that Caroline wouldn't die, but it still was one hell of a thing to have to see Tyler just give her to him. But it was two episodes ago when he for the second time was taken down a notch by Silas and the events of last episode that has set him on his path. He realized that it wasn't brute force or any kind of violence that saved him, it was always ends up being the stronger power which is knowledge, and that knowledge through Caroline led Klaus to believe for the first time to be capable of forgiveness, which in retrospect has been his character's arc all season. He will now of course want to get revenge against Silas, which means working with the others and becoming an antihero. And if the producers continue the pattern this means Tyler will come backn for all of five minutes until next season's big catastrophe that seperates him and Caroline happens and he is gone for several episodes. Seriously anyone wonder what Michael Trevino has done to not once but 3 times been made to leave the show for a while and come back? Either he is moonlighting or the producers really don't like him.
So if I had it my way The Originals would have Klaus be like Anne Rice's vampire Lestat, and no not become a vampire rock star, well actually... kidding. have him be an antihero who does good things but only if it serves themselves, but the more they do good and help people the less anti and the more hero they become. Now with Hayley, by the way what is up with the hate people ok hating the character I get but the actress? come on now! Anyway with her also wanting redemption while finding her family and herself all sounds well and good but also sounds a little bit like Klaus being Angel and Hayley Cordelia so I have no problem with her on the show, and if Elena ends up being human again maybe that will at least have her possibly become a hybrid. Finally with Elijah being the smart one, he would be the Wesley. But I do have one question, what about Rebekah? it says nothing about her going on the Originals or staying on TVD which leads me to believe that her character might not be long for this world, maybe she'll get the cure and actually run off with a happy human life, oh wait I forgot what show I am talking about.
Ok in the end I will be checking out The Originals, but with no way to tell if the Silas threat will continue into next season here's hoping this means that they will bring in new bigger badasses into TVD

Can someone explain me why the hell is Hayley in the spinoff? God, it's a terrible character, it's boring, definetely not interesting and his presence in TVD was totally useless. And I' sorry, but I think Phoebe Tonkin is over acting in every single scene!

On the other hand I'm happy Joseph and Daniel have theur chance, but I'm sad, 'cause TVD is going to miis them, so much!

  • bleumystique Apr 07, 2013

Right?! I know that Phoebe is a treasure. Sure, fine, whatever. But I don't find much dissent when I say that Hayley is a sucky character. Plain and simple. There is no way to spin it. She's pointless, useless, uninteresting, and rather dull. I think the show will be interesting, but it is taking a lot in me to wrap my head around dragging her into this show. I feel like they're only doing it to have the werewolf element using a face we sort of know, and to find somewhere to put Phoebe because everyone adores her.

  • Kameleon Apr 05, 2013

I'm really sorry to see them go actually. I love the Originals on TVD. I honestly think both shows will suffer when taken apart. It works because they're all on one show, TVD. Rip it apart and everything goes to hell, I fear.
And even worse - and I'm going to sounds overly shippery and girly here - does this mean we'll never get Klaroline??? I mean, Caroline will NEVER leave TVD, she's a core character to TVD. And if Klaus leaves TVD... And becomes a core character on the Originals...? Well, we all know what happened when Angel left Buffy to have his own show. They were never to be seen together (as a couple) again! Except for this one episode which then in turn was completely forgotten by Buffy in this cruel plot line, but okaaaaay... I'm over it. Or at least trying to be for the last ten years or so.
Anyhoo... Just saying: Klaroline looks absolutely devilishly lovely. And I'm pretty sure it'll never happen now.

On the "yeah"-part: Joseph Morgan does deserve his own show. He deserves to be able to stare at people very intensely for at least 20 minutes a show instead of his usual 5 minutes now. That devilishly arousing stare... ^^

  • eliana1st Apr 06, 2013

AGREED completely,... I have begun mourning Klaroline,... :(

  • Dre5d Apr 05, 2013

They shouldnt have this be buffy and angel thing, i Rather it be one vampire show on the CW and not two, right the originals dont sound all that exciting

  • Summer_Maru Apr 08, 2013

I agree! One show with all of them would be better. There would be a wider range of storylines available.

  • AndreaMcCooey Apr 05, 2013

I love Klaus, but I'm positive TVD will suffer when he leaves. He's the best thing about it at the minute. I understand why he has to go though, The Originals were meant to be a Big Bad, and they ended up being so much cooler than the so-called good guys, it became much easier to root for them than the "heroes" of the show. They have definitely outstayed their welcome in Mystic Falls, as they are soley plot devices at this stage.
I'm a big fan of Phoebe Tonkin's, but I HATE her character, and I especially hate that whole her and Klaus shirtless hugging thing that was going on a few episodes ago.
So, to sum up, this could go either way really, but I definitely think TVD will be the worse for losing Klaus.
Also, really happy that Joseph Morgan will not be unemployed, cos that would be terrible.

  • eliana1st Apr 06, 2013

AGREED ,... Hayley does not make any sense,...And who can forgive the writers if they end Klaroline and shove Hayley and Klaus down our throat ,... certainly not me,...
