It's Official: How I Met Your Mother Is Renewed for a Ninth and Final Season

Those two kids who've been sitting around waiting for Ted to get to the point of his damn story received some great news today: The tale of how their dad met their mother will finally be told. CBS has ordered a ninth and final season of How I Met Your Mother, and yes, the network promises to reveal the identity of the mother before the series goes off the air for good.

The entire cast will be back for the send-off, as will creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas.

The big question is when viewers will meet the mother. We know Ted meets her at Robin and Barney's wedding, which will take place at the end of the current season, but that doesn't necessarily mean we'll know her identity at the end of this season or the beginning of the next. She could be a bridesmaid, the caterer, the flower girl, the valet parker, or even a groomsman (it's the 2010s, people, get with the times!). Or, if you insist, the bass player in the wedding band. Or maybe Season 9 will be Ted having flings with half the women from the wedding and the identity of the mother will play out like some PBS mystery show. Maybe the mother is actually a test tube. I don't know.

Let's all just be happy that the nation's biggest question will be answered and Ted's kids can finally get on with their lives.

I truly believe that the last scene of the series will be when Ted (and us) meet the mom.

The show is called "How I Met Your Mother." It implies that the goal, the end point, of this story is when Ted meets her. It's not "How I Met Your Mother, Dated Her, And Eventually married Her." So, no, I don't think we'll see Ted date her (heck I don't think the mom will say more than 5 sentences) before the show ends.

if they continue on a 9th season i know how the series will end. his story will be interrupted by a knock at the door. it's the child protective people that are coming for the kids for the child abuse of making them sit forever listening to this ridiculously long story.

oh and i forgot to mention that's after another fakeout like in the pilot "and that is how i met your mother.....'s roomates sisters sex slave." the pilot said and that's how i met....your aunt robin.

This show was entertaining in the first few seasons, but it became dull so I stopped watching it. You can’t set goal (meeting the mother) and then prolong the race for years and keep people interested.

if american writers want to see how to do a show with a goal properly they should turn to the uk. the original the office show only lasted 2 years/seasons because it was supposed to be a documentary and what kind of documentary lasts for almost a decade. but then if the american the office only lasted a few years or less then they wouldn't make as much money which goes to the real reason shows last so long here.

Agreed. There's no worse writing than that which keeps writing away from the ending rather than towards it. I finally dropped it, and I don't miss it.
And it's only the last season as long as they agree it is. God forbid ratings jump 1% early next season and the rumblings of a tenth season begin.

This was one of those shows(along with Big Bang Theory) I've tried to like countless times. I'd always get through a couple episodes and just lose interest completely. I really like a lot of the actors too.

No show on TV right now is worst than the office.

I've liked the show since the beginning, was really funny... but yeah it's gotten a little less funny and it's time to finally end.

I am afraid we've been cultivating this feeling for almost 8 years, and they won't be able to impress us hard enough to make it worth it the wait... I really HOPE I am wrong, and they take out a trump card =P
