Mafia Drama Brotherhood Gets Whacked

According to E! Online's Kristin Dos Santos, Showtime's drama Brotherhood will not return for a fourth season. Brotherhood depicted an Irish-American mafia family in Rhode Island. The Peabody Award-winning show was known for its quirky writing, initially the work of Henry Bromell and Blake Masters.

Though the show's network, Showtime, hasn't officially declared its end, E! discovered that the 3rd season DVD would be labeled "The Final Season," and commenters on the site were quick to recognize the show's imminent end from the previous season's episodes.

Will the departure of Brotherhood leave a hole in Showtime's canon? Or was the mafia drama riding on the unforgiving coattails of the last premium cable mafia show, HBO's The Sopranos? America's been in love with mob-related television (and film) ever since The Godfather, but Brotherhood's portrayal of Irish-American gangsters may have disappointed fans who prefer their wise guys to hail from Italy.

I bought the 1st season, and I am hooked on this show, what a shame that Showtime is cancelling it, Like deadwood, should have lasted longer.

It's sad actually , Brotherhood caved in after season 2 , it was too bad , and you could make the 4th season easily but they won't , and that's really sad cause Sopranos was light , Brotherhood was dark and angry...

I am very sad to see this show get whacked, yet with this said Showtime did NOT promote this programme the way they have some of their others (i.e., The Tudors, Nurse Jackie, whatever that Tara show was). I felt it was a disservice to Brotherhood, and I hope that MAYBE it would be able to get picked up by another premier cable station.

I didn't know it was still on? Thanks Showtime for that publicity machine! (that's sarcasm)

This show was nothing but an attempt to make money off the sopranos fame.

That sucks. I loved Brotherhood. Showtime didn't promote it like they do their other shows though, so I don't think it caught on much. They always have to cancel the good shows.

This show was awful. I rented disc 1 of the first season and got as far as episode 2 (which by the way I didn't even watch it all the way through) because it was so awful. Definitely won't miss it.

We'll see what Showtime has to say to this.
