Olé! El Rey Renews Soccer-Spy Drama Matador for Season 2, Ahead of the Show's Series Premiere
It appears to be El Rey's goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo *breath* ooooooooooooooooooooooooooal to keep its upcoming series Matador on the air for as long as possible. The upstart network, headed by director Robert Rodriguez, has ordered a 13-episode second season of its new soccer-spy drama Matador. And if you're thinking, "But wait a second, Matador hasn't even debuted yet!" you are absolutely correct.
Matador, which premieres Tuesday, July 15, is one hell of a concept. Get this: It follows a CIA agent who goes undercover as a professional soccer player to expose corruption among the team's brass! So while he's trying to get closer to the truth, he also needs to play well enough to stay on the team. How radically ridiculous is that? Gabriel Luna, Nicky Whelan, and Alfred Molina star, and Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Dan Dworkin, and Jay Beattie created the series.
I've actually seen the pilot and it's a total hoot. Very grindhouse, obviously, but set in the world of undercover spies and professional soccer. It is shamelessly accepting of what it is and has no ambition to ever win any awards, perfectly satisfied to stick to guns, soccer balls, and lots of running, which should appeal to El Rey's target audience of Latin-American men with lots of testosterone.
Will you be watching Matador with me? Please say yes.
