NBC Renews Parenthood, Orders a Final Season of 30 Rock

NBC continued its flurry of renewals today by picking up bubble show Parenthood and a final season of Emmy-winning comedy 30 Rock, says TV Line. NBC is expected to announce its 2012-2013 schedule on Monday at its official Upfront presentation, but at this point, most of the surprise will already have left the building.

Parenthood had danced along the line between getting renewed and getting canceled, but a late charge in the series' third season gave it just the nudge it needed to earn a renewal. So far, it's only the second drama to return to NBC's schedule for 2012-2013: Law & Order: SVU was renewed for a 14th season yesterday.

More interesting is the renewal of 30 Rock for a final season. The Tina Fey-starring comedy will get 13 episodes to end things after a very successful run of seven seasons (the show is currently in Season 6). This seems to fall in line with rumors that surfaced earlier this week that NBC would be renewing many of its comedies for shortened 13-episode seasons. Could a final 13-episode season of The Office be coming, too?

We haven't heard anything yet about Community or Parks and Recreation. Or Whitney, for that matter.

But for now, more Parenthood! More 30 Rock! Good decisions, NBC.

Finally NBC does something right, Parenthood is a quality show with great acting and solid writing. Maybe this will be the turning point for NBC...oh, wait, they just renewed Whitney? Nevermind.

"30 Rock" is still my current go to comedy. I just love the way it works. But more importantly....

"Parenthood"!!!!!!! The single best drama choice by NBC every year for the past 3 years (and I'm going to put it on through to next year, too, so 4). This show is fantastic and my words here cannot possibly fully describe my full excitement at this development.

NBC has nothing in their reserves, they really need to focus on building a single night that works on its own without a 2-hour reality show, and branch out from there. Without a better programming development department, they cannot afford to cut anything that's at all working right now. Parks & Rec, Community, even Shitney all have built-in audiences that the network cannot afford to lose by replacing with untested junk developed by the simpletons over at NBC programming. That said, they also cannot rest on the shows they currently have, their ass-backwards programming and marketing teams have shed audiences on every single one of their established shows - drama and comedy - with terrible ads, bad imaging (bumps, promos, voice-overs), and just a feeling of ineptitude at the top. They need to work on putting shows together better with other shows that work with them - Community and 30 Rock don't work together, Up All Night off of The Office and leading into Awake? No. And canceling Law & Order loses them a keystone type of programming - SVU is too edgy to work before 10pm and can't work with anything family-related, but anything traditional drama really has nothing else to lead into now on their network. Shortening their existing but struggling sitcoms is an interesting idea, but it'll only create fickle audiences that dump out halfway through a season.

Been reading that Community is also getting a shortened final season and The Office has been renewed. Not sure what to believe so I'll just sit and wait til I see something more official.

Doesn't Grimm count as Drama? Yay for 30 Rock!

  • TheBam711 May 11, 2012

Sci-Fi/Fantasy stuff usually isn't counted as drama. Parenthood would actually be the 3rd drama. (Smash was the 1st drama to get renewed)

More 30ROCK sounds really good... and I really like when networks respect their viewers and don't just cancel long running shows without a proper ending... I am looking at you CBS ... for cancelling Ghost whisperer just like that.
