GOOD AND BAD RATINGS NEWS

... After hitting a series low and giving Fox every single reason to cancel it, Fringe bounced back in a big way on Friday with a 1.2 rating among adults. That's still pretty horrible, but at least it's an encouraging sign. And with Alcatraz failing to put up good numbers in a much better time slot, Fringe's chances of renewal suddenly just got much better. But the decision will still come down to the wire. [TV By the Numbers]

... It looks like the sour taste left in viewers' mouths after the Season 1 finale of The Killing is still there. Only 2.5 million viewers watched the multiple airings of the Season 2 debut last night, almost half the audience that saw the Season 1 premiere's triple airing last year. AMC has a track record of building audiences over multiple seasons, so this looks like a problem. [EW]

DEVELOPMENTS AND PICKUPS NEWS

... Fox is doing what it can to help desperate attention-starved singles find love in front of millions of strangers. The network has ordered the dating competition show Take Me Out to series, and it sounds like a perfect example of the sorry state of network television today. One man will go before 30 women and try to keep them interested, and if he's picked by one, they'll go on a date. [Fox via press release]

... Someone is actually making a short TV show based on the cell phone game Angry Birds. [Fox News]

KIDS CHOOSE THE DARNDEST THINGS NEWS

... Nickelodeon aired the 2012 Kids' Choice Awards last night, and all you really need to know is that kids are stupid. I mean, come on! Adam Sandler won best movie actor for Jack & Jill! As for TV categories, some show called Victorious won best TV show, A.N.T. Farm's Jake Short won best TV actor, and Selena Gomez won best actress for her work on Wizards of Waverly Place for the fourth year in a row. Nice work, kids. Now get back to eating paste and running headfirst into things, you morons. [Nick.com]

COUNTRY MUSIC FANS CHOOSE THE DARNDEST THINGS NEWS

... CBS aired the 47th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards last night, celebrating all types of songs about broke-down pickups, no-good husbands, and drinking yourself stupid. Taylor Swift won the big overall prize of Entertainer of the Year, and Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton took home the awards for Best Vocalist of their respective genders. The broadcast also led CBS to ratings victory for the night, with more than 13 million people tuning in. [Academy of Country Music]

CASTING NEWS

... Charlie Sheen's dad will be played by Charlie Sheen's dad in the upcoming FX show Anger Management. Martin Sheen has been cast as the father of the lead character, a former ballplayer dealing with anger issues. Of course, this news comes from Charlie Sheen, so we'll have to wait for an official source to confirm it. You know, someone who actually knows what's real and what isn't. [Access Hollywood]

... Dermot Mulroney has been cast in Season 2 of HBO's Enlightened, the best show you didn't watch last year. He'll play an investigative reporter who's looking into Abaddon at the behest of Amy (Laura Dern). [Deadline Hollywood]

... The Vampire Diaries guest-star Malese Jow will play one of the leads in The CW's Shelter. The drama, produced by J.J. Abrams, follows the employees and guests of a New England resort. Jow will play a party girl who works at the resort. [EW]

this is why when i have kids, they will watch shows that i personally pick out that are awesome like Community, Games of Thrones, old good Nick and Disney shows, etc

Fringe is the best sci fi show around, it deserves a proper ending, not a cancellation.

  • nico_scaR Apr 04, 2012

Well if it's to keep the writers from crappy seasons like season 3 maybe it's better to keep'em on their toes with rumors about cancellation (ok, don't really cancel it, you know, tease them a bit so they don't get comfortable and lazy) ;-D ...

We must've not watched the same 3rd season of Fringe. Excellent season of television there.

Hmm, seems like Anger Management is trying so hard to be something. I find most FX sitcoms work because they are trying to only be themselves, not awesome. That said, Martin Sheen is unmined comedy gold, he's got the chops but usually doesn't get cast for it, so it could work.

That is what you get AMC, for canceling the excellent Rubicon and bringing back the much less interesting show The Killing.

I hope Fringe get renewed soon :)

    FRINGE FRINGE FRINGE FRINGE!!!

Enlightened was an awesome show and thankfully a season 2 was granted in spite of relatively low ratings... I hope House of Lies, another ratings-challenged and not particularly liked by anyone, also gets a second season....

Malese Jow was pretty great on The Vampire Diaries. It's good to see her getting a lead role in a new show. Hope it's good!

Also, I'm hoping Fringe isn't cancelled, but I also get the feeling the writers are wrapping things up now that we're nearing the end of the season. If we get a satisfying ending, then I'm happy. I wouldn't want Fringe to be renewed for a fifth season and then dropped after thirteen episodes with no conclusion.
