News Briefs: Mariah Carey Is Your Newest American Idol Judge

By Tim Surette

Jul 24, 2012

... The rotating door at the American Idol judges' table continues to turn, and with Jennifer Lopez not coming back because she's so busy being Jennifer Lopez, Fox had to scoop up another big booty name. And it did! Mariah Carey was confirmed as the new judge at today's TCA session for Fox. This is great because I like all the things I don't give a flying fish about to be in the same place. [TV Line]

... Laurence Fishburne's name is being circulated around the casting offices of NBC's upcoming Hannibal. He's in talks to play the major role of Jack Crawford, the man in charge of the Behavioral Sciences Unit at the FBI. Fishburne was last seen on AMC's back-to-back airings of The Matrix and by Jerry Loman of Norfolk, Vigrinia, who finally took his friend's advice and watched Apocalypse Now when he had a day off of work at Quizno's last week. "It was okay, but Transformers was better," Loman later told a friend. [TV Line]

... Sofia Vergara is to be seen and not heard, but that doesn't matter to Seth MacFarlane. The Modern Family Emmy nominee will lend her voice to Family Guy and The Cleveland Show in the upcoming seasons of both shows. [EW]

... Mindy Kaling has confirmed that she's not totally done with The Office. Kaling was in LA promoting her new Fox show The Mindy Project when she told assembled critics that she'll appear in at least two episodes of the long-running NBC comedy she's smartly ditching for her own show. Finally! The greatest mystery of the universe has been solved! [Vulture]

... Sci-fi favorite Adam Baldwin has booked a new gig. Law & Order: SVU will welcome Baldwin as Captain Steven Harris, the temporary leader of the unit. He'll replace Captain Cragen, who woke up next to a dead prostitute in the Season 13 finale. Welcome to the club, Cragen! Baldwin is known for his roles in cult favorites Chuck and Firefly, which begs the question: Who has better fans, Chuck or Firefly? Let's see the comments pour in guys, so I can impress my boss! [TV Guide]

... That guy from Bent who I guess is charming will romance Jess in the next season of New Girl. David Walton will play a bad boy who mistakes Jess for another woman. [EW]

... After achieving big success with an early internet roll-out last season for New Girl, Fox is embracing the web once again. New comedies The Mindy Project and Ben and Kate will be unleashed online starting August 27. That's a month before their official debut on September 25. [The Wrap]

... USA Network looked at its competition and realized it was the only network without a singing show, so it scooped up the first project it could. That would be The Choir, a reality show that follows some guy who helps train choirs across the country. It's based on the British show of the same name and has a 10-episode order. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Fox's MasterChef has been renewed for Season 4 and I swear I've reported this already but that's what happens when Gordon Ramsay has 20 shows on television that are all the same. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Fox has ordered a pilot for an adaptation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow from Fringe co-creators Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci. The CW also has a Sleepy Hollow project in development. [EW]

... Teenagers love The Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, and Pretty Little Liars. Those shows and their respective casts cleaned up at last night's Teen Choice Awards, with TVD winning "Choice TV Show: Fantasy/Sci-Fi," Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev taking home surfboards for "Choice TV Actor/Actress: Fantasy/Sci-Fi," and Candice Accola and Michael Trevino clinching "Choice Female/Male TV Scene Stealer." Pretty Little Liars won "Choice TV Show: Drama" and Teen Wolf won "Choice Summer TV Show." Hit the link for a full list of winners. [Teen Choice Awards]

... TMZ is reporting that some guy is trying to sell a sex tape he made with Friday Night Lights star Minka Kelly. Clear eyes, full hearts, and whole lotta other things. [TMZ]

The Choir? What's next, a show about a guy that goes around to various high schools teaching jazz hands to their cheer squads? I say, Bring It On! (wink wink)

Why do networks always copy each other on show ideas (Sleepy Hollow, Beauty & the Beast, etc.)? Reminds of the time NBC heard about the behind-the-scenes SNL show that NBC was making, so NBC had to make one as well. Those crazy kids at NBC still don't know how to run a network, gosh love'em!

Don't make me choose between Jayne and Casey. Not fair. Jayne.

Mariah will have a bangin body on ever episodes, because of all the dresses she is going to wear?

I cant believe people still care about American Idol, I stop watching after the season Carrie Underwood won. It's the same thing every year. 1,000s compete it gets down to the final 10, they get voted off one-by-one each holding back tears as the say they're just happy they made it this far, and then someone wins, although that doesn't mean much because the runners-up tend to be more successful and the winners end up more poor then they were in their sob story that were played during their auditions.

You have a boss Tim, I always thought you were the big kahuna at

Oh great. Mariah feeling herself up on a show that is long since dead. Yippee. (I'm serious: unless she's acting or singing, whenever I see her she is always running her hands up and down her breasts. It's gross.) I'm glad I never watched Idol to begin with. I wish they'd get the hint (lower numbers, lack of Emmy love) and just shoot that lame horse.

Mariah Carey's "American Idol" Contract And The Demands They Finally Gave In On:

    My dressing room must have:

    - One of those Russian dolls that has smaller and smaller dolls inside of it.

    - Campbells Tomato Rice Soup

    - A laptop computer, which when turned on, goes to "My eBay Selling Page."

TCA: You didn't say that Teen Wolf wasn't even mentioned during the ceremony. NOBODY (not even the cast or Jeff Davis) knew if they won until they saw the list of the winners AFTER the ceremony. It's unfair not only to the cast but to the fans who voted for our favourite show. Not cool, TCA.

  • Anonymous_A Jul 25, 2012

That really happened? I didn't watch the show because I live in Australia. This reminds me of the time that Supernatural won 2 awards at the PCA's and they didn't bother to show it live. Can't believe that the TCA's screwed Teen Wolf over.

  • Atlantida Jul 25, 2012

Yes, it really happened. The cast asked their fans through Twitter if they missed smth during the ceremony. The fans asked Jeff. He answered that he also didn't know/understand anyth. And then some time later after the ceremony they saw the list of winners and informed us through Twitter. That's all. Very humiliating. Don't even imagine what the cast feel.

come on. Firefly has been off the air for a decade and it still is the king of the scifi fanverse (and Jossverse). So that has to win

although I am fans of both of shows
