Ratings: Grammys rock the house
Sunday night's The 49th Annual Grammy Awards scored the best ratings the awards show has seen in years, earning and 8.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 20.1 million viewers overall, ccording to Nielsen Research. That's 15 percent better than it did last year, when the telecast was up against American Idol on a Wednesday.
CBS took the nightly crown by a wide margin. ABC, Sunday's usual champ, did well with Desperate Housewives, in at a 7.1 with 18.1 million viewers overall.
At 8 p.m., CBS scored an 8.3 rating for the first hour of the Grammys, while ABC took a 6.2 for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Fox earned a combined 3.5 average for The Simpsons and The King of the Hill. NBC scored a 2.0 for reality show Grease: You're The One That I Want, and the CW took a 1.0 for 7th Heaven.
At 9 p.m., CBS scored an 8.9 for the second hour of The Grammys, and ABC took a 7.1 for Desperate Housewives. Fox notched a combined 3.6 average for Family Guy and American Dad, while NBC scored a 2.4 for The Apprentice and CW earned a 0.6 for a repeat of Beauty and the Geek.
At 10 p.m., CBS grabbed an 8.4 for the last hour of the Grammys. ABC scored a 4.5 for Brothers & Sisters, and NBC took a 2.5 for Crossing Jordan.
Overall, CBS took a in 7.1 rating/17 share in 18-49s, with 19 million total average viewers; ABC, 5.4/13, 14.3 million; Fox, 3.0/7, 6.5 million; NBC, 2.2/5, 6.9 million; CW, 0.9/2, 2.4 million.
