Revenge "Retribution" Review: What Revenge? What Retribution? Move Along, There's Nothing to See Here

Revenge S02E15: "Retribution"

If you were hoping Revenge would return with a vengeance, well… it didn't.

After a three-week hiatus and Fauxmanda's Titanic death (My heart will go on. It must!), was it too much to ask for a little retribution in an episode titled "Retribution"?

In a word, yes. The Revengers are still the Initiative's bitches, and instead of taking action against the Graysons (dammit, she promised!), Emily is boohooing over the loss of her BFF. You know, that chick who took half-a-million bucks from her only to return and steal Emily's one true love. (At least we know that Fauxmanda is positively, absolutely, undeniably, and reliably dead: The Coast Guard retrieved her body and Charlotte identified it as that of her stepsister.)

Widower Jack has the sads too, but he's also mad. Grrr! Watch out, Conrad Grayson, because the schmuck who's been duped by everyone who ever set foot in his bar is gunning for you!

And that's not all: Jack also has his weepy sights on Emily, whom he blames for corrupting his wife, endangering his family, and generally just being a liar liar pants on fire.

While recovering at home (thanks to the Graysons footing his medical bills), Jack discovered Fauxmanda's hidden key to a storage locker in the marina. (He seemed awfully mobile for someone who nearly died from a gunshot wound, but vendettas can be galvanizing. Grrr!) There, Mr. Porter found not only the Hamptons' most-wanted computer, but also the juvie records linking his late wife to the respectable Ms. Thorne.

So now that Jack hates her, Emily seems to be pining for him even more, and feeling even more protective of her little boy blue.

And when Aiden stole back her computer from the Stowaway (Jack suspected the Graysons, of course. Grrr!), Emily tossed it in the ocean. Suddenly prison is too good for the Graysons, and she wants "no more distractions."

Really? She seems pretty distracted by Jack, no? Even worse, her attention is about to be diverted by a brother. Who also happens to be her brother—or more specifically, Eli James, the foster brother she hasn't seen since she burned their house down 14 years ago.

And unlike the dimwitted Jack, Eli actually recognizes her. He didn't say so when they first met at Fauxmanda's grave, but in the preview for next week's episode, he jibed, "Looking pretty good, for a dead girl!"

Amid all this finger-pointing, Nolan identified the recently severed appendange as indeed belonging to Padma's father. And even though his ladylove's pops might already be dead, Nolan finished the Carrion program and gave it to Padma. Now she has a finger and a thumb… drive. Will the R-Team ever gain the upper hand?

NOLANISMS

– "I know you didn't come all the way across town to deliver your halfhearted condolences." (To his new boss, Daniel.)

– "Control, Alt, Delete. Got it." (To Daniel again, while threatening to "break (his) digital kneecaps" if he didn't hand over the Carrion program.)

– "Nolan Ross, life's pawn, how can I help?" (Answering Emily's phone call.)

QUESTIONS

1. How cold does this dish of revenge need to be before Emily finally serves it?

2. Am I being too hard on Jack? Is his anger finally going to make him a badass?

3. This episode was directed by Helen Hunt. Should she stick with acting?

4. Mason Treadwell, Mr. Trask, or Jack Porter: Who has the worst hair?

5. Is Jack and Daniel's new swagger sexy, or are they just acting like dicks?

I'm starting to roll my eyes with Jack. What did Amanda seen in this guy?

am actually glad that a lot of revenge has not been taken, thou fauxamanda's death is mournable and the graysons should be punished, but if Emily gets her complete revenge in this season itself, what will the show progress on?? i dont want this show to end anytime soon...but yes it would be nice if each episode could b a KILLER one, and no more deaths in Team Emily please!! Kill someone more from the Initiative or someone from the Grayson's!

In the end till now from Season 1 not a single shred of revenge has actually been taken by Emily, D Graysons all of em Victoria, Daniel, Dad, Sis r all alive n kicking n have done reasonably well for themselves, with Daniel now running his dads company while dad is running for governor!!,,,,Infact now the Graysons seem as some 1 who actually were themselves victims by the so called Initiative who r like ultimate bad guy with powers but actually just 1 guy with a cell phone and so Graysons did what any 1 does too save their own skins when their backs were pressed against d wall! With all that money, time and supposed cunning I just wonder when and if at all Emily will ever take even a small shred of revenge or actually jus keep loosing more ppl like her doppelganger - amanda, jack who gives shit abt ems now and Nolan who lost control of his company to Daniel.......etc...jus bloody tedious, go somewhere, create some plot, all jus look aimless n now d laptop with any real evidence is also gone,,,,,,i say just kill whoever u have 2 with a gun n spare us another season plz, time has been wasted!

I'm ammending my statement. A lot of SECONDARY consipirators have been screwed over. The guy who wrote the book that sealed her father's fate. One of the witnesses that purfured herself. That judge/politician person. Season 1 saw a lot of the minor targets either taken out or knocked down a peg or two.

As we've learned, Amanda is also after the Initiative BEHIND the Graysons... and for that she needs them on the board. If they go, that only leaves Daniel and the Initiative might just cut ties with him due to the parents publicity.

Ugh, this show is getting annoying. I liked it when it was all cunning schemes to off the nasty people who deserved it, and each episode ended with a satisfying "Ha! Hows THEM apples?". Now...now the show is so twisty and...well, dark that it has lost 99% of its appeal for me. Yea, the formulaic pattern could have gotten old...but maybe just a few thrown in here and there so that we feel somewhat satisfied and not depressed and annoyed at the end of every ep? Also, am I the ONLY one who thinks Em waiting to tell Jack who she is is a horrid idea? Nolan's advice of "Don't make him lose her twice" is AWFUL advice! So what? Instead wait until he has come to terms with her death, found peace, their son knows his mom as Amanda Clarke and THEN drop the bomb? So much better

If Emily doesn't want to send them to prison and she doesn't want to kill them, then what kind of revenge does she want? Media shame and loss of wealth? I always thought she just wanted to "take them down" and that evidence would have done that. Now, I just feel confused.

  • coolshradha Mar 14, 2013

NO i think Emily is right in not killing them or sending them to prison either. Death is too painless for it to be Revenge, and with Power like Grayson's, we have already seen how easily they get out of Prison. I think the Best Kind of Revenge will be D Miserablest's life imaginable for them, shunned by their Children & d world, a life imprisonment outside Prison.

  • acre1993 Mar 12, 2013

i cant believe the reviews that im reading for this show i honestly think that people are being too harsh on this show, this in my opinion is one of the best episodes

  • coolshradha Mar 14, 2013

I agree...season 2 has brought in so many different shades and emotions to Emily's & Nolan's characters and Look at the way Jack, Declan & Charlotte's Characters are growing! Even though i detest Victoria, we have seen a new side of her Emotions as well. All this makes for a great show and Revenge still is Awesum!!

    Here's my theory

I think that Padma is the head of the Initiative, got close to Nolan and then on purpose slipped the name of the program when talking to Nolan so that he would find out she was being threatened by the Initiative only to tell him that they've got her father and it would be more believable and gain his trust without any doubt, then she went and cut her own father's finger just so she could get her hands on Carrion.. Yes? No? Anyone?

  • coolshradha Mar 14, 2013

I agree..Padma's story is def not buyable..maybe the initiative got a whiff of the Revenge Emily is planning and send Padma to find out what they are upto...its unbelievable how quickly padma Confessed to her Father being in danger & her being threatened by the initiative! Had she really been threatened by the initiative, how could she so easily disclose everything to Nolan ??? weird aint it?

  • KayWatkins Mar 13, 2013

I agree. I'm definitely not buying Padma as innocent in all of this. And that threatening voicemail left by the initiative? Come on! No way would they incrimate themselves by leaving voicemails! And I noticed the look on her face after she got Carrion. It was cold, not concerned about the impact of what she has or even relief that this could save her father. Yeah.

What happened to this great show? Did the writers just get their heads all full of praise and then give up or did ABC executives decide how Season 2 was going to work and the writers are just keeping up with stupid suggestions. They gave the Grayson's an out. Then they kill off Amanda/Emily, one of the few bright spots left? They should have just killed off Daniel. Watching his scenes is like watching paint dry. I loved this show too bad it is now dead. ABC really likes original "Torchwood" members in really stupid roles in its shows don't they?

  • JessicaDoty1 Mar 13, 2013

Fauxmanda? A bright spot? Um, were we watching the same show?

  • smarcos3 Mar 13, 2013

I hated fauxmanda so I'm glad that's over

  • acre1993 Mar 12, 2013

nothing happened, this show is finally starting to come together
