Seth Meyers will coanchor Weekend Update

Seth Meyers has been named the new Saturday Night Live "Weekend Update" coanchor, replacing the departing Tina Fey. Meyers will join returning SNL cast member Amy Poehler.

Meyers joined the show in 2001 and last season rose to head writer position alongside Fey. Meyers will continue in that role, with Paula Pell and Andrew Steele joining him as co-head writers.

SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels said he chose Meyers because he and Poehler have good chemistry in the recurring sketch "The Needlers," about a couple who should have long ago divorced.

In addition to Fey and Rachel Dratch--both heading to Fey's new NBC sitcom 30 Rock--three other SNL cast members won't be coming back this season. Finesse Mitchell, Horatio Sanz, and Chris Parnell were given pink slips earlier this week.

Michaels said budget cuts at NBC were responsible.

"The budget is significantly less than last year. [There are] massive budget cuts this season. I think it's probably companywide at NBC," Michaels told reporters in August. "I made the decision to stick with the 20 shows and cut everything back."

SNL returns with its 32nd season premiere September 30, with Dane Cook hosting and musical guests the Killers performing.

Seth is not funny. He is going to bomb in the Update Chair even bigger than Horatio did. I was hoping they would put Parnell with Amy, he's the best suited for the bit. One of the things I look forward to with SNL is the new cast members and it doesn't look like they are going to have any this year.

Well, it's official. SNL is going to suck again next year. In the past, Michaels had the balls to axe the cast when the show wasn't working even when the cast was more talented than the current one. I believe it was the 94' season that was exceptionally terrible and massive changes brought about Will Ferrell, Daryl Hammond, Cheri Otero, etc. Meanwhile, last season was almost completely devoid of laughs and most of the cast is returning. Hopefully, the featured players were bumped up because they actually had some potential. But Meyers and Poehler? You've got to be kidding me. Amy is talented but WU clearly was never her strong suit. And Meyers just plain isn't funny. They should just go back to the one person format and find someone who can do it well. Oh and one last thing....Kenan wasn't fired but Parnell and Sanz were? Sanz may have been a one trick pony, but at least his one trick was funny. And Parnell wasn't a comedy God, but he certainly had more moments than Kenan.

Financial cuts? Yet Tina Fey is leaving and Im sure she was highly paid and Rachal leaving? I'm sure the salaries of both of them didn't equal 2 of the ones let go. Oh well, guess we will see how the show goes.

Okay. With Seth Meyers co-anchoring Weekend Update alongside Amy Poehler there has got to be at least one episode of SNL where rather than anchoring as Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler the do it as the Needlers. Then, following the commercial break, the Needlers go into their usual rant about how they each believe the other did a crappy job and ending with them making out on the Weekend Update desk (off-screen...of course).
