So You Think You Can Dance S09E15: "Winners Chosen"

Well, that was wonderful. AND WEIRD. But mostly wonderful. Yes, it's with bittersweet tears and sloppy sighs that we must once again bid farewell to one of television's finest reality competitions. And also, perhaps, happiness itself? Okay, that's probably not true, but So You Think You Can Dance just makes me so happy! It's both earnest AND cool, tacky AND elegant, emotional AND festive, sexy AND creepy, cerebral AND beefcakey, American AND British. Lots of ANDs. It's a testament to this show's versatility and massive appeal that some of us can be thrilled by a Celine Dion-scored contemporary piece while others of us might prefer, I don't know, ratchet krump? See what I'm saying? This show is WEIRD. And straight-up wonderful.

In keeping with tradition, tonight's finale was more or less a celebration of the entire season. Not only did we revisit highlights from the audition rounds, we got to see the entire roster of Season 9 contestants (hey Matthew!), as well as 11 recreations of the judges' and finalists' favorite routines throughout the season. All that, plus a bunch of BRAND NEW routines, which—Dang, do the dancers ever get to sleep? Anyway, first things first:

AND THE WINNERS ARE...

That's right, Eliana and Chehon took the honors this year! America, you did well.

I think we all kind of expected Eliana would take it, but I don't think ANY of us expected that she would also dress like a hooker and fart a firework.

You know? Some things you just can't predict. Seriously excellent choices though. Chehon's victory was the real delight here; it seemed that while America loved Cyrus' charisma and insane (though limited) skill set, most voters responded to Chehon's arc from stolid ballerino to open-hearted adonis. Both Tiffany and Cyrus will most likely be All-Stars in future seasons, but Eliana and Chehon are both winners this show can be proud of.

ROUTINE OF THE NIGHT

It's saying something that the highlight of the evening could very likely be a lowlight also? I don't know! But it was the Top 10 contestants matched with 10 All-Stars dancing to a District 78 remix of a track from The Lion King (!). I mean, I can't even—Just see for yourself:

So which was it: Terrible or amazing? For me it had just enough arm dancing to push it firmly into "amazing" territory. Loved it!

But another new routine brought a smile to my face this evening: The Christopher Scott hip-hop foursome in which he himself danced alongside tWitch, Cyrus, and my ladycrush Comfort. Just way fun (the fake bullet-time made me LOL):

ROUTINE OF THE SEASON

Because so much of the finale was about revisiting everybody's favorite routines throughout the season, I wanted to get in on this too! (To be honest, out of all the things re-performed in the finale, the only routine I truly liked was the Witney & tWitch hip-hop routine—definitely not that terrible suitcase one.) Anyway, I know you guys might not agree with this, and the judges didn't even go crazy for it the first time around, but for me this lyrical hip-hop routine was my favorite of the season:

Sorry, I just love it so much. But then again, my favorite routine from LAST season was the Ricky & Sasha Waacking number, so you can feel free to disregard my personal tastes.

ETC.

... How insane was Mary Murphy's boutonniere-brooch-thing? Didn't it look like any second it would start talking into the microphone?

... Shipping these two so hard:

I loved their collaboration that began the show, but something about it didn't totally come together for me. Still though, Sonya Tayeh and Christopher Scott are probably my two favorite choreographers on the show and are this season's MVPs for sure.

... I'd forgotten this until we saw flashbacks to the auditions, but remember when Witney had braces?

... The main thing I took away from Carly Rae Jepsen's performance was that it's apparently 1989 again? Seriously, lady was like a brunette Debbie Gibson up there. Oh, and one of her backup dancers was Season 8's Ryan, who I remember used to make me nervous that she'd accidentally murder Ricky at any moment.

... The finale seemed especially LIVE this year, as there were several awkward moments caught on camera. Like at one point I'm pretty sure Cat attempted to skip the clip-package of Cyrus' favorite routine, but producers played it anyway, and then while it played we could still hear Cat talking to somebody, possibly a producer.

... Those sassy twins from the auditions: Still awesome.

... Speaking of awesome... It's time to get real:

UNOFFICIAL WINNER OF THE SEASON

Congratulations to NINE TIME WINNER Cat Deeley for being the true and deserving overall winner of yet another season of So You Think You Can Dance. Honestly, not to get all gooey here, but is there a better on-air host anywhere on any show? No, no there is not. It's never not astounding how amazing she is at her job. There was a point during last season's American Idol where Ryan Seacrest was so ill that Nigel Lythgoe enlisted Cat Deeley as a possible fill-in. That that didn't end up happening will always make my heart hurt. But yeah, anyway, credit where credit's due: Cat Deeley is the best.

What did YOU think of the Season 9 winners?
What was YOUR favorite routine of the season?

How badly will you miss this show?

I live in the UK and unfortunately, can't get this broadcast from my network service provider. Any idea where I might buy an official dvd recording of the full uncut series 9?

  • Phoenix1781 Sep 21, 2012

    LMAO "fart a firework".

Cat is awesome. Has she won an Emmy yet??

Totally agree with the winners. Cyrus will be loved like Twitch, who also came 2nd.

Loved the "Four Ghost" routine, that was my highlight of the finale. Now I have to wait almost a year for its return *sigh*

Cat didn't win, maybe she will next year! Congratulations to Eliana and Chehon to win season 9 of this show! I'm glad these four beautiful girls: Audrey, Lindsay, Tiffany and Witney didn't win at all.

  • MeredithVeatc Sep 21, 2012

CAT DEELEY!!! Yes, she's the winner of everything. I was really pleased with Eliana and Chehon winning, because they're who I had been voting for. It's always nice when my hard work voting pays off. I can't choose a favorite dance. I just don't know! And I will miss this show like crazy. I'm super worried that it won't be back next summer. Then what will I do during the hot months???

I LOVE this show. It's every bit as good or maybe better than The X Factor and Dancing With The Stars. Keep it on! I don't want it to go!

  • thorswitch Sep 20, 2012

I'm pleased with the winners. Cyrus is very likable, but Chehon is by far the better dancer, and he seems like a pretty cool guy, too. He was adorable with his mom! I had wanted Cole to win, but Chehon was my 2nd fave, so it's all good.

My favourite routine of the season was Cole (and someone's - I didn't pay a lot of attention to the girls - sorry ladies!) recreation of the "Gravity" addiction routine. I had loved it the first time when Kupono and Kayla did it, but Cole was just SO much more menacing, it made the whole thing feel fresh again. I also loved to see Eliana and Chehon's classical ballet. I'm glad they took advantage of the opportunity presented by having 2 trained classical ballet dancers to show how beautiful ballet really is. I hope we get the chance to see more in the future.

I don't miss the show too much during it's off-seasons because there's so many other things to watch, and by the end of a season, I'm usually getting a bit tired with the two hour episodes and - especially - all the filler. I find I start DVRing the closer we get to the finale, and then forwarding through most everything except the dancing and critiques. But I'll be all rested and ready by the time the show returns :)

Elaina and Chenon are very deserving nuff said

Fav routine anything with Whitney, she was so amazing but for some reason America did not think so!!

and yes I will miss the show and MR PRICE you are so correct CAT IS THE BEST !!! only Jeff Probst might be better !!

  • MayTanner Sep 20, 2012

YAY! Eliana AND Chehon won! I'm over the moon. You know, Price, I think, I might have farted fireworks, too. By the way, congratulations! I've read that you tied the knot. Were you tired of being asked when you would finally take your girl down the aisle? (Just saying, I married after being in a relationship for eleven years and people never stopped yammering until that day).

But back to the most exciting reality show on TV! The Finale was superb (mostly because my favorite dancers won). I had a feeling that Chehon might have a chance to win when Cyrus danced his favorite routine (of course in his style) at the end. It felt like a consolation prize. As a runner up he's tremendous. I can live with that although I'd have prefered Cole in the finale.

The Lion King number blew me away. I wish I could be in Vegas and make the SYTYCD experience there! So many great dancers working together I didn't know where to look! I'll go and watch it another dozen times!

Although it had some really brutal cuts I think this was really the best season until today. I hope that the show will be kept around for a long time. It's a wonderful ode to dance.

And Cat Deeley should give classes to her fellow hosts on other reality TV shows! Damn, is she great! Cat, the Great! I hope she gets the Emmy.

Until next year then, Price! Keep on dancing! :)

Not to gossip but... Price is *married*?! I honestly thought he was saving himself for Colton Haynes' chest :p

  • DavidJackson8 Sep 20, 2012

I don't watch the show and this is the first time I decided to read even a little bit of your review on SYTYCD, but I'm kind of glad that I randomly decided to read this article because of:

"I think we all kind of expected Eliana would take it, but I don't think ANY of us expected that she would also dress like a hooker and fart a firework."

This comment, along with the accompanying GIF, made me laugh pretty hard. It TOTALLY looks like she farted a firework... followed by a slightly smaller cocaine-filled fart.

  • Mey Sep 20, 2012

Haha :-) I feel you, I love sytycd so I do watch that show but as I decided to give up on The Vampire Diaries (show simply isn't for me anymore) I am decidedly going to keep reading Price's recaps.

They're the best, they work on so many levels :-)

  • Phoenix1781 Sep 21, 2012

WHAT O.o?? No more Vampire Diaries!!!

  • Mey Sep 21, 2012

Nope, I was defeated by the Elena effect (and Julie Plec's depiction of that poor excuse of a lead).

Not even my precious Rebekah or Elijah *insert due drool* could prevent my transition into a TVD non-watcher :p

I'll come and say hey on the recaps, I'll always read the recaps :)

  • Phoenix1781 Sep 22, 2012

I'll stick it out for now. True though, Price's recaps are just as good as the show and sometimes even better!

  • mac94102 Sep 20, 2012

I was pleasantly surprised by the winners. I do not share your love of Cat Deeley, but I LOVE Christopher Scott! His group routine last night was the best. My second favs were Tiffany's Celine and Will and Amelia's kitty kat number.

  • stanking Sep 19, 2012

She DID dress like a hooker (slap that costumer!) and the fireworks gif is hilarious. Kudos to America for voting well. Both Eliana and Chehon, especially Chehon, were the correct winners!
